Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail

Thanks to Rick for an awesome suggestion!

Meet in the parking lot (the part that faces Reservation Road, next to Jack in the Box). Address is 211 Reservation Road, Marina, CA.

Ride the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail and Ocean View Blvd/Sunset Dr to either Pt. Piños (~28 miles round trip) or Spanish Bay (~30 miles round trip). Stop for lunch somewhere near Fisherman's Wharf or Cannery Row on the way back.

Route Map, open to changes/suggestions: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3651626

Note that ridewithgps elevation calculations always result in more climbing than actual. This is pretty much a flat ride.

This is sure to be a fun ride with ocean views galore!

Wow! Thought you might've had some good ones from where you were shooting. Nice work! Thanks for sharing! :)

Thanks for the great ride, hopefully my first of many with the group. It was definitely a beautiful day. I also very much appreciated the riders in the group--very safety minded (not so common a priority among many bicycling groups). I had a great time.

Great ride, guys! It was nice meeting all of you. Couldn't have picked a better day to be out on the coast. Cruising next to the waves and million-dollar-homes was fantastic. Just as amusing were all the people checking out our group instead of the harbor seals on the rocks. Guess we're just as rare? :)

Good to see you two again. The picture of you and Travis turned out well!

Nice!!! Great job with the pictures! Thanks for sharing :-) Like what they say in BROL: no pictures, it didn't happen.

This cetainly was a beautiful day to be out there--sunny all day!. Kudos to Rick for suggesting this ride and to Carol for selecting the day! I uploaded a few pictures.

Looking forward to being there. My wife declined the ride tonight--just me coming for my first ride with the group.

    Hi,
Weather looks good for tomorrow. It will be in the 60's, not much wind, and should be sunny. See you all in the morning! Carol

the route map you posted is very cool! Also, you mentioned about a lunch stop, are we going to try to pick a place that we can keep our trusty steads in sight or do we need to bring a lock? I would think that a short cable might work and just daisy chain them together so it would have to be an all or nothing deal :^)

    November 27, 2013

    • Russell

We'll try to select a place where we can see the bikes/trikes for sure. Still wouldn't hurt to bring a lock (I'll bring a cable lock that can be used to lock 3-4 bikes/trikes together).

      November 27, 2013

    • Kat

We'll be bringing a U lock and a 3'-4' cable. Haven't tried locking up the Magnums (and their wide tubes) yet, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out.

Weatherman says thumbs up!!! Please, everyone try and get there early enough to be ready-to-ride at 10:30 am so we can be on time to meet Kat and her husband who are going to meet us about 9.5 miles from the start.

My wife, Kathleen, and I will be there. Looking forward to my first ride with this group. Thanks for organizing this.

    November 26, 2013

    • Russell

Hello Tony, glad to see you're able to make this ride, looking forward to meeting you and your wife. You don't have to if you do not want to but if you could RSVP Yes +1, that would be cool!

Since the ride start is in Monterey and traffic can vary alot especially on the weekends would everyone be open to sharing their cell numbers in case they get delayed missing the group start?

    November 15, 2013

    • Kat

Whoops! Sorry, I should've mentioned that we're joining the group further down the trail for a shorter ride. Maybe in a couple of months I'll be able to start at the same place and time, after I get 'bent into shape. ;-)

      November 15, 2013

    • Rick

sorry for the confusion, I meant that people will be traveling from the bay area down to the monterey area and could get delayed in traffic.

      November 15, 2013

  • Kat

There will be a Party of Two Magnums waiting for you at Municipal Beach just before Fisherman's Wharf. Woohoo! I'm crossing my fingers for some good riding weather.

    November 15, 2013

    • Russell

We should be arriving at the Municipal Beach area (9.5 miles from the start) around 11:30. I'll send you my cell number so you can call or text if needed.

      November 15, 2013

    • Kat

      Thanks, Russell!

The ride start is still at the advertised time and place.

Monterey start is for Kat and her husband (and perhaps any others who do not plan to ride the entire route).

  • Scott

It's a two hour drive for me, but I'm thinking about going, I'll know closer to the date and will update my RSVP accordingly.

    November 11, 2013

  • Rick

    I'll be on my trike!

    November 10, 2013

  • Russell

OK, this ride is going to happen! I plan to ride a trike on this one unless ALL other RSVP riders are on bikes.

    November 10, 2013

  • Russell

    Rick,

I want to go if it my schedule does not conflict, we have at least 2 more riders, and the ride is at least 25 miles. I'd bring my trike and leave the 2-wheeler at home.

Starting at Reservation Rd is probably the best starting spot to avoid what one person on the REB recumbent website had called the "bleak" portion of the trail. The mileage would be about 24 miles total if the ride turnaround spot was in Pacific Grove. If we rode to Pt. Piños, that would make for a 28-mile ride. If we rode to Spanish Bay, the point where the road turns inland and climbs for awhile, 30 miles. If we rode to Spyglass, 40 miles total. My personal preference would be for the latter 40 mile route, but the 30 mile route is what I would vote for. If this ride doesn't pan out, we should definitely plan to schedule this ride in summer.

Rick, I see you are in San Jose. I have yet to meet you. Will you be attending the November 24 ride in Dublin?

    October 31, 2013

    • Rick

Hi Russell - Are you also in SJ? If the weather is decent, I'll should be able to do the Nov 24 ride.

      November 1, 2013

    • Russell

No, I am in Livermore, but I work in Santa Clara and do ride the Guadalupe River Trail on occasion after work

      November 1, 2013

  • Carol

I rode from Castroville to Fisherman's Wharf and back in September. I didn't mind the "bleak" portion but would like to see what's beyond the Wharf from a cyclist's perspective.

    October 31, 2013

  • Scott

I'm going to go ahead and release for announcement for others to sign up for.

    October 31, 2013

  • Scott

This one may be a bit far for me, but if it looks like there's enough interest, I may give it a go.

    October 31, 2013

  • Russell

I haven't rode this trail before so that alone adds to its already appealing appeal. My rule of thumb when deciding whether a ride is too far away or not is that the pedaling time should be equal to or greater than the round-trip driving time. If we rode to Pebble Beach (as one poster on REB suggested) I'm game. Any Sat. or Sun. except 10/26-27 works for me.
