BARC Monthly Ride - Iron Horse Trail (North)

Location by vote. Location with the most votes wins! Voting ends on Saturday, January 11.

...and the winner is: Northern Iron Horse Trail

Meet at 10 AM at the intersection of the the Iron Horse Trail and Honey Trail. The meeting spot is close to the Pleasant Hill BART station. Also near the corner of Jones Rd. and Coggins Dr. For precise meeting spot, go to www.maps.google.com and copy these coordinates:[masked],[masked]

We'll ride south to Lunardi's (next to the trail in Danville) for lunch and return. ~20 miles round trip.

Those sticking around afterward for extra miles will decide route at that time. Possibilities include riding the Iron Horse Trail to it's northern terminus and/or Contra Costa Canal Trail to Martinez.

Bit more pedestrian traffic than I expected. This northern section is nicer first-thing in the morning. Live and learn. Still, the company is still great and it's still a more scenic part of the Iron Horse IMHO.

Sorry I decided to bail mid-way and punch on through to Dublin. It's just easier for me since I use BART to get to these rides. Great riding with y'all again!

I am not feeling well and will miss this ride.

    Where do I park?

I was going to park on del hombre right next to the trail. I usually can't fit in a parking garage with the trike on top of my car.

Iron Horse starting at Pleasant Hill sounds good for this ride- riders wanting to add miles could start in Dublin, meet the others at the start at Pleasant Hill Bart, and then return to Dublin

If there were enough people wanting to do "alot of miles" you might consider an down-n-back: Pleasant Hill through to Dublin and back: some 40 miles. I can't go that far, but since I take BART anyway, I could do a one-way and hop back on BART in Dublin while y'all return back to Pleasant Hill.

After the ride for additional miles works for me- Neal: let me know if you want to carpool

BART often does track maintenance on this stretch, which can delay trains 10-20 minutes and really mess-up train transers. I plan to catch the earlier train: so I'll either be 20 minutes early, barely on time, or a tad late. ;-p

Don't know where we are going (yet), but there's no sense being late.

Won't be able to ride at all this day:(

Short answer: I'll let the group decide. If starts near BART and is not too hilly, I'll be there.

    Some ideas:

--An up-n-back on the north section of the Iron Horse (Pleasant hill BART to Lunardi's and back) would be a change. It's slightly less milage as the southern up-n-back we use now (Lunardi's is almost exactly in the middle).

--For something new, an "End-to-End" on the Iron horse is fun. Though it may only be fun for me since I BART to the Iron Horse to begin with...might be more of a pain for others. I recommend starting at Pleasant Hill BART and riding to Dublin/Pleasanton BART, feels more "downhill" in this direction. Stop-over at Lunardi's.

(So for me, the "end to end" is: cycle to San Leandro BART take Richmond train, transfer to Pittsburg-Baypoint at 19th St. station...which can be a 15-20 minute wait on weekends...exit Pleasant HillContra Costa Centre. Ride Iron Horse south to Dublin-Pleasanton BART, take Richmond train back to San Leandro, cycle home.)

Speaking from absolutely no experience whatsoever, is it possible to Start at the Daly Station and head to the TCP Harding Park/lake Merced/Lakeshore area. Head north up one side of the park with Golden Gate park our turnaround point then head south around the other side of Merced Lake and back to the Bart Station. I'm just throwing out ideas. Please feel free to tell me this is one of my bad ones.

Neal, a "bad" idea would be to ride on I-880... I have no experience with this route so cannot comment other than to say it probably wouldn't be suitable for the "BARC Monthly Ride" (refer to my reply to Rick below). It may make for a great ride on another day though...

Great idea!! Heres a ideas to get the ball rolling, both new and previously run rides

coyote creek trail previously billed as the whole enchilada

    17 mile drive

Canada Road in San Mateo. They close the road to cars on Sundays but we'd probably want to a few miles to make a loop some part of the Bay Trail

a section of the Iron Horse Trail thats a bit farther north. Ive heard its more scenic. Years ago we road the Diablo Centry which was in, out, and around Blackhawk Country Club and part of the route was on some beautiful trails that went though a orchards. Cant remember the name or locations but perhaps someone that knows the area can.

This might be a better spring or summer ride and quite a ways away but the Sacramento River trail is also suppose to be nice

Rick, you can only vote for one :-)... Keep in mind that the "BARC Monthly Ride" is intended to be the most accommodating ride and will focus on paved bike paths, flatter routes, and ~20-mile advertised distances. It has become the norm for some of the riders to add mileage and pace before and/or after an advertised ride. The monthly ride will eventually come to all of the bike paths in the Bay Area best-suited for the monthly ride and perhaps even go to Sac once per year... Aside from the "BARC Monthly Ride", all distances and locations are wide open and any member can schedule/post/advertise a ride now. Just make sure it isn't on the last Saturday of a month...
