San Jose Bike Party Stars and Stripes Ride

  • July 18, 2014 · 8:00 PM

I took my trike for my first SJ Bike Party last Friday, not knowing what to expect, and this is what I posted on my fb page afterwards: "I have never seen so many or such a variety of cycles, cyclists, costumes, boomboxes on trailers, and lights, what a sensory overload, 18 miles of crazy in the dark, but oh so joyful. I hung out with two other bent trikes at the two party stops, was amazed to see several 2 wheel bents among the thousands, and was so glad I was on three. Start wasn't until almost 8:30, I got home at 12:30, the dancing was still going strong in Lowe's parking lot."

It seems they don't announce the route until earlier in the week, and at that time I will post here and identify somewhere we can park and meet as a group before going to the start together. There were about 8-10 food trucks at both Regroup lots, and as a group, we can head back to our cars much earlier, unless people want to stay to dance and try to talk over the loud music. There were some fireworks this ride, and I'm sure there will be a lot more in July. This wasn't Daryl's first SF Bike Party, so he may have more suggestions. http://www.sjbikeparty.org/

Great time, fun to ride in group of 4, more would be fantastic!
Lots of positive feedback from the thousands of riders (website says 4-5K), with lots of interest in trikes, I would never attempt this on anything else.

EVERYONE should attend this ride at least once! VERY memorable! This was a party on wheels with in my estimation close to 2,000 riders who (to me) seemed pretty well-behaved. Lots of people were sitting outside their homes waving at all the riders, food trucks and sights galore at the two rest stops. The route was planned very well to accomodate the large number of riders without too much of a negative impact on auto traffic, very well-planned I'd say.

The panoramic photo in the park did not save on my phone and I cannot find the adapter yet for the pics taken with the camera so no photos to post (yet).

Since SJ has the highest incidence of West Nile Virus in the state, it probably would be good to wear skeeter repellant, since the hour or two after sunset is when they are most active. With spraying campaigns, I've seen few mosquitos, but crows keep dying in the area. Be careful out there.

I'll just ride too fast for the mosquitos to keep up and never stop... also, I'll avoid having to eat crow...

Thanks Russell, your # is in my cell. My # is[masked]-1681. Daryl, I thought I had yours, but I am not finding it. I'll be on my Red Scorpion wearing safety vest and flashers on my helmet. Daryl is on an Ice, and I think he's bringing someone who bought his Sun. I will wait for Daryl and friend at my house. If he gets stuck in traffic, no big deal, the ride did not start until 8:30 last month, and with some 5000 riders, I have no idea what time the last riders got rolling. Russell, I'll text you when we get rolling, google says it takes 30 minutes by bike. This is the latest info on the ride: http://www.sjbikeparty.org/2014/07/17/stars-and-stripes-ride-information/

This is the finalized route, I don't see any major changes from their test ride: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GTIHet0i48AGkC-YrzfxAIsRk-3jcHc5JYKEOiHEQmM/edit

My plan is to ride the Guadalupe River Trail from work (near Hwy 237) and meet y'all at the start. I'll look for y'all under the mass of palm trees near the starting spot across from the Shark Tank. I'll be riding my yellow Scorpion trike. Rich, I'm going to send you a message so we can exchange phone numbers.

this was the route for their test ride #2 yesterday, so I don't anticipate major changes: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5185788

I don't know if the SAP Center parking lots will be open, but when the Sharks play, I think they charge $25. I propose people park at my house 2540 Gerald Way, San Jose 95125. Let's meet at 7:15 so we can leave by 7:30, which will get us to the start at 8, there is no reason to be early. Daryl, if you want to start with me, but need to push it back some, we can be at the back of the pack rather than the front. Propose a time that works for you. This will add 4.4 miles to the start, but we will cut off from the ride at Keyes St and 11th St to return, which decreases their ride 2.7 miles and adds 4.8 to ours, giving us a total of 25 miles, 2 stops with food vans, dancing if you want it. I plan to be home before midnight.

I can make coffee if people need it for the drive home.

Congrats on selling the Sun, maybe you can sell the TerraTrike by then also!
What time do you recommend riders show up at the first rest stop if that is the route they prefer?
