Delta Backroads Ride (Rio Vista, CA)

This is one of my all-time favorite flat road rides on some of the most scenic roads that the California Delta has to offer. Much of the ride is on roads where vehicles are scarce, offering a lot of opportunities for side-by-side riding and chatting. This ride will include:

1. Two free ferry crossings! http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/deltaferries/

2. A quick side trip through the town of Locke, with its early 1900's architecture you might think you stepped back in time 100 years

3. Lunch break in Clarksburg at Husick's

4. A quick break in Walnut Grove for ice cream or coffee or ?

5. Afterward, there is a restaurant/bar in Rio Vista we could stop at for a beer and/or dinner. A rather interesting place to check out I have to say... (no credit cards): http://www.fostersbighorn.com

Meet in front of the Rio Vista City Hall at 1 Main St. in Rio Vista, CA at 9:30 AM

Distance: 70 miles

Pace: 14-18 mph when rolling

Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5571622

A shorter version of this ride with a different starting spot and a more relaxed pace can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/SFBARC/events/200633432/

Thanks to everyone who came out! I've ridden this ride a number of times before but I can say without hyperbole that I've never enjoyed it as much as I did riding with y'all!

    September 20, 2014

  • Ron N.

Took the shorter ride. The two groups shared about a quarter of the total ride -- a really good ride through the vineyards and along the sloughs.

Running very late, I will try to catch up along the route.

    September 20, 2014

    Russell-
I will be riding in from San Leandro and will be driving a full size pick up, so I can carpool (take others) but I am concerned about the wrap up time because I have another event to attend that evening. Is there any chance that I could finish the ride by 4 or 4:30? If not, I will probably have to bow out of one of the events.

    September 14, 2014

    • Russell

Paul--with breaks/lunch/waiting for ferries/etc., my best guess is we won't be back in Rio Vista until around 5:30 PM.

Russel- Ok, thank you, I withdrew from the other (evening event) so as to be able to complete and enjoy this event.

Hmm. Not sure about 70 miles on the trike. I could either bring my upright bike or start somewhere in the middle, maybe do 50 miles or so. How much climbing on the 70 mile route? Like half moon bay to davenport?

    September 1, 2014

    • Carol

If you take your trike, I'll keep you company at a slightly slower pace, shorter lunch and all.

      September 16, 2014

    • Paul F

Carol- I don't understand all this talk about you being slow. Seems to me that you are usually in front of me.

      September 16, 2014

  • Zach

I'd be interested in doing this ride if I can arrange a carpool.

    August 12, 2014

    • Zach

It is more direct if you don't have to go through Alameda (take 680 instead of 880) and if I pick Carol up in Orinda which is on my way so I arranged to carpool with Carol.

      September 7, 2014

    • Carol

I'm on for carpooling with Zach.

      September 16, 2014

  • Dave

I really wanted to do this ride, but it conflicts with my good friend's 25th wedding anniversary party that day. I've done the math, and there is no way that I can do both. I might try this one by myself another time.

    August 20, 2014

    • Dave

Any idea when we would complete the ride? I couldn't see us getting done before 4:00 PM.

      August 22, 2014

    • Russell

Dave, with breaks/lunch/waiting for ferries/etc., I think you're right. My best guess is back in Rio Vista around 5:30 PM.

      August 22, 2014

  • Alice S.

Ron, you talked me into the shorter ride. Are we using the ferry? What do they charge?

    August 13, 2014

    • Ron N.

Alice, there are no ferries on our shorter route -- only a couple of bridges. Glad you are coming.

      August 13, 2014

  • Rich C

I know I can't do Saturday the 20th, and so far look good for Sunday the 21st. Since this is flat and lightly traveled, are you triking or biking?

    August 8, 2014

    • Russell

Rich, I'm sorry that you won't be able to go on Saturday, but Saturday will be the day. I'll try to make it up to you by buying your dinner at the SJBP ride Friday...

      August 12, 2014

    • Rich C

I'm happy you are joining me, no need to buy.

      August 13, 2014

  • Carol

Would anyone be interested in a 12-14 mph average moving speed group to do this route on the same day? I would like to ride but don't think I'd keep up for very long with Russell, Dave and all. The group could start earlier in hopes of having lunch with the 9:30 group.

    August 12, 2014

    • Russell

Carol, having ridden with you before on numerous rides, you'll be OK with the group pace. Call me if you need any more reassurance on that account.

      August 12, 2014

    • Carol

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Okay, time for some training rides for my butt and my bladder! :-) Let's get more people on this ride! I'm gonna ride....

      August 12, 2014

  • Ron N.

After talking to Russell I am proposing a shorter/slower ride starting in Courtland at the parking lot between Bates Elementary and Courtland Library at the eastern terminus of Primasing Ave [masked], [masked]). Departure time TBD after I get an estimate from Russell when his group would be arriving at the market on the southwest corner of Netherlands Rd and S Center Street in Courtland. There is a picnic area on the northeast corner across from the market. This would be the lunch stop. The slower ride would depart after the faster group and take the some route south but returning to the Courtland starting point via the Paintersville Bridge. The total miles for the shorter/slower group would be 21.3 miles (http://ridewithgps.com/users/268072/routes).

    August 12, 2014

    • Russell

Ron, my best guess to our ETA at the Holland Market in Clarksburg (not Courtland) at mile 26.4 is between 11:30 and noon. The wait for the ferry over to Ryer Island can vary, but is usually 10-15 minutes.

      August 12, 2014

    • Russell

Ron, I am going to create another event listing so that the meeting spot address in Courtland and other details can easily be seen by everyone.

      August 12, 2014

  • Alice S.

Ron, I can do the 21 miles, but not as fast as you guys. I think I need a faster bike. Guess I'll bow out too.

    August 12, 2014

    • Ron N.

Alice, this second group is designed specifically to accommodate slower riders like you and me. I might be able to go a little faster than you, but I don't need to.

      August 12, 2014

  • Alice S.

Ron Nelson, I will think about the shorter ride. My Sun is not speedy. I go about 8-10 mph TOPS. I don't want to hold the group back. What do you guys think?

    August 11, 2014

    • Ron N.

Alice, I am willing to do a ride that day in the Delta, but coordinating with this ride doesn't seem practicable. If you have suggestions for a "slow poke" ride I am all ears.

      August 12, 2014

  • Ron N.

I can't do the whole distance but I can rendezvous with the group at Mile 19 (Courtland Rd and Rd 145) and ride into Clarksburg for lunch and on to Mile 36 (160 and Rover Rd). Parking in Courtland, riding to the rendezvous point and returning to my car from the bridge makes for a nice 20 mile circuit.

    August 8, 2014

    • Russell

Ron, my only concern would be that road rides usually have a faster pace than BARC Monthly Rides or bike path rides. I've added a "Pace" section in the description to help people decide.

      August 11, 2014

    • Ron N.

Russell, thanks for that info. I can't do that pace, so I'll bow out.

      August 11, 2014

  • Rick

Sounds like a fun ride but Im not up for 70 miles. Will there be shorter versions?

    August 10, 2014

    • Russell

Rick, I'm not sure (yet) if there will be shorter versions--there has been some interest expressed in that possibility. All I can suggest right now is to look at and keep an eye out for all the messages/posts/updates for this ride.

      August 11, 2014

  • Alice S.

I could do a shorter ride, or maybe go on the other ride.

    August 9, 2014

    • Ron N.

      Alice,

      August 9, 2014

    • Ron N.

Alice, did you see my post at the bottom about meeting the group at Mile 19?

      August 9, 2014

  • Alice S.

Too far for my,slow trike. Have fun, guys and gals. Post lots of pictures.
