Point Lobos State Natural Reserve / Weston Beach

Hello LF'ers,

As David suggested we are moving the start time to morning and making it a full day meetup. That should give us the flexibility to shoot in the morning or afternoon or shoot through the day in this area. Let us sync up on the message board for specific meeting locations, times, etc. We are looking forward to meet you all there.

thank you,

Arun

The park entrance is located three miles south of Carmel on Highway 1. There is a fee for automobiles to enter the park but we could meet at the entrance, group and go from there.

Photo opportunities: Few locations inside the park and in adjacent locations (such as Garrapata state park).

Weather: If we are fortunate, we could shoot in the afternoon sun, i.e., without the fog. Sunset is around 8:15 PM.

What a fine sunny day with pleasant temps and modest breezes. From highway hiked in down south to Weston Beach by about 8:15am then exposed 4 sheets looking down at bedrock over 2 hours though nothing too strong. Met Harlan, Vijay, Mathias, Atul, saw David walking about. Tons of visitors everywhere by 11am and probably handed out a dozen business cards to people gawking at my wooden "antique". After lunch walked back in going north to Coal Chute Cove aka The Pit and then Moss Cove taking last of a half dozen more looking down beach and stone exposures by a later than expected. All with my 150 Nikkor M except the last 6:45 pm shot a 300mm Nikkor M landscape of waves crashing Granite Point. Later spent a half hour working more closeup in the coarse granite sands of Monestary Beach All afternoon worked lots of sand and stone closeups with my Canon G10. So much material there reminds me to check tides for a return trip this summer.

My first all day meetup - tiring, but good! Nice to see the crew.

Arrived late, and didn't meet more than two other members, but that was great fun anyway. As always with this group we went to a great spot, well researched in deed. :)

Missed an exit and am delayed. Won't be there until 930. No need to wait for me. But if the group heads to a particular spot and you can update this thread that would be great.

There is a single road into the park. Don't drive in unless you don't care about paying $10 only to have difficulty finding places to park. The whole area is dense Monterey pine forest. Here is a link to the trail map:

David, thank you so much for your information and links to the maps, a huge help! -Harlan

Print it out. Where the orange dot is on the junction of CA 1, is the entrance. Just park along the highway OFF the pavement in the dirt. Then walk in on the solid white line and walk west past the entrance station kiosk that is sure to have cars backed up each eager to pay the $10 after asking 99 questions. It is free to walk in without checking in at the kiosk. Continue west until the junction of the signed Mound Meadow Trail, then take that south through the pleasant forest all the way to coast a total distance of just 2/3 mil from the highway. Beware of the grizzly bears. (:

After reach the paved road on the south shore bluffs, turn right on the road and walk a short way to the T in South Shore Trail where the little round cove shows on the map. That is Weston Beach down below and it is not signed. Does not even look interesting from the road. The interesting stuff are the bedrock patterns after the surf washes over them. I'll be there early.

Tomas, I have a spare ball head and quick release plate that can support a view camera. Let me know if that's helpful.

    May 17, 2013

    • Vijay R.

Tomas - I have an extra Bogen 3021 tripod that I will bring for you to borrow, but no head. Hopefully Arun's head will work with it. I know there are two different sizes of screws through which heads and legs mount. Hopefully it's a match.

      May 18, 2013

    • Mark

I also have a spare ball head with QR plate, mine is mounted on a short center column from a Bogen 3001 tripod, so perhaps that will fit Vijay's tripod....

      May 18, 2013

  • Vijay R.

Looking forward to it. I will be there at 9. Anyone else arriving at that time?

    May 17, 2013

    • Vijay R.

Hi Harlan - I haven't been there before either. I am hoping there is an obvious/prominent entrance with a parking lot nearby.

      May 18, 2013

    • Vijay R.

I'll be at the entrance board (see Atul's note) at 9.

      May 18, 2013

  • Atul M.

    Vijay,

There is a prominent park entrance board on the right side of the road (heading south on Highway 1). Parking is available before and after the entrance on both sides of the road. Here are some pictures of the entrance:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=point+lobos+entrance&hl=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=ycyXUY7tDIrmiAKd54GoCA&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1418&bih=835

We can meet outside the entrance.

    May 18, 2013

    • Vijay R.

Thanks Atul. I will plan on being near the entrance board.

NWS has backed off from the 20>30mph afternoon winds for Monterey that were still forecast 12 hours ago. In fact even winds this morning all along Central Coast shoreline areas are lower than were advertised. From NWS today 9am Saturday, Monterey and Big Sur Coast:

TONIGHT...MOSTLY CLEAR EXCEPT PATCHY FOG AFTER MIDNIGHT. LOWS IN THE UPPER 40S. NORTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 20 MPH...BECOMING 5 TO 15 MPH AFTER MIDNIGHT. .SUNDAY...SUNNY. PATCHY FOG IN THE MORNING. HIGHS IN THE 60S TO MID 70S. NORTHWEST WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH.

    May 18, 2013

    • Arun S.

David thanks for the update. Am hoping for milder winds than our last outing.

      May 18, 2013

  • DavidS

KSBW Montery Surf forecast also shows wind Sunday 5am 12 mph 11am 10mph 5pm 17mph. Of note with northwesterlies blowing, winds on the lee south side of the Point Lobos peninsula, ie Weston Beach, or along Carmel River State Beach are always lower than along the coast of Pacific Grove and Monterey or along the Big Sur Coast. For this person if the winds play out per latest forecasts, it ought not impact the group having at least a productive morning. So I am now going to try and join the meetup, getting down to PL likely at maybe 7am while modest high tide is dropping. Will not be driving into the park but rather parking along highway 1 and walking in with my big orange/black daypack and carrying two tripods.

    May 18, 2013

  • Mark

I hope to also arrive at about 9.

Oh, weather yesterday was terrific! Moderate clouds in the sky to make it interesting and to allow imtermittent softer light at times. Temps about 68-72 or so. Light breeze.

I was in Monterey this week on business and I went to Point Lobos yesterday afternoon after I finished my meetings. I shot for a couple hours with my Rolleiwide. What a wonderful place! Unfortunately can't get back down there due to family obligations this weekend, you people have a good time!

Hi guys, silly question but does anyone have an extra tripod? Mine was stolen out of my care last week. I just remembered I dont have one because I used a rental for my finals work and turned it in. lol I need a sturdy one for the cambo at around 22lbs...

    May 17, 2013

  • Drew S.

I can't go in the morning, but I might be able to make it around 2 or 3. I'm changing to "no" so you don't have to wait for me.

    May 16, 2013

  • DavidS

Check the SF/Monterey NWS...Marine Weather...Graphical Marine Forecasts...Wind Speed & Direction tab then change date to Sunday as NWS has been bumping up northwesterlies though it is still too far out for a confident forecast.

Looking forward to this meetup. Here is my plan: my wife is going to drop me off at the entrance late morning, and I will hike around the reserve for the day while she goes shopping (this might be an expensive meetup!). I will send out tweets on where in the park I am. If anybody wants to meet up, follow me @sauerwald

    May 16, 2013

  • Arun S.

All, we have made changes to the meetup schedule. Please let us know when you plan to be there and we can sync up there. I plan to be there by 10-11ish and stay for a few hours. thanks!

Fog is not necessarily bad - gives a softer light. SUnset is late this time of year - may be better light either earlier or later than 3:00pm.....

Why meetup at 3pm? Best time for closeups of formations at Weston Beach per tides that day are going to be early morning to mid morning and then about mid afternoon. One wants the rock wet and glistening which is often a brief window while waves are still splashing at specific levels:

Its been a long time since photographers could linger in the park till sunset except in the winter. I've talked with park people about it several times over the years.

    http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=571 http://www.pointlobos.org/general-info/rules-and-regulations
Reserve Hours The Reserve opens daily at 8 A.M.
Due to staffing shortages and buget constraints the Reserve closing time is currently 7 pm. All visitors must exit by 7 pm. No entries after 6:30 pm.
Beginning October 16th with the shorter days...closing time will be 1/2 hour after sunset. No vehicles or pedestrians will be allowed to enter after sunset.
