Niles Canyon RailRoad Yard

Hey Everyone,

Alan Frank a fellow 4x5 shooter has offered to be a docent around the yard.

He also suggested this day and time for the best light in the canyon.

Cheers

David

I'd like to also thank Alan, and if somebody has a postal address for him, I'd like to send him a print of one of the images that I took during the outing - if anybody has his mailing address, please contact me....

Hi Atul, thanks for your feedback. I am looking forward to your photos from this outing.

Hi Bernice, thank you very much for the detailed instructions. I will try it out and revert. I am bummed that i missed a great opportunity to meet you and others in person. I hope for another meetup soon.

Hi Alan, I was wondering about going to the railyard alone or with others who may be interested in (re)visiting this beautiful place. Could you please share your thoughts when your time permits. Thank you in advance.

This was my first Meetup with this group and it was great/ Many thanks to Alan and Atul. I have processed my negatives but have not yet printed anything (I have been in Japan since the shoot until now!) Anxious to see what the prints come out like!

    Hello, LF'ers..
Hope you all had a great outing. I came in late and was turned around by the cops, so I went to Dumbarton bridge with Vishal and made a few exposures. Hope its okay to share a couple of those images here. Cheers. -Arun

I would like to give Alan a big thanks for hosting this event, I really enjoyed it. It was also fun to see everyone and meet some of the new people. Seeing the steam engine run was also a big treat. Roger

It was a good event, meeting with many of you, and learning.
I got some good advice from some of the guys and gal.

Most commonly heard refrain today, "Dude, you're in my shot!" Followed by, "Oh, sorry." :p

Wasnt that bad at all :)

Excellente to have the up close views and as always, hear all the expertise flow from the mouths of the members!!!

If you're not on the road yet, you may want to stand down. Niles Canyon Rd is closed in both directions (I 've tried both); six car pile up I'm told. Ouch. :(

I packed it in and went home. Another time, then?

We are at Dumbarton bridge, gotta burn some film...

Afraid I'm out today. Wife and 2-yr old daughter sick....have fun you guys!

One never knows what the final count will be...

    March 23, 2013

  • Karl F.

Nope. I think the "D" pointer on the Google map is closest to the location.

    March 23, 2013

  • Nick S.

When I open google maps for this event it says 'Sunol Water Temple' - is this the right place?

    March 23, 2013

So annoyed. I have to work.

    March 22, 2013

    • Karl F.

      Oh no!

      March 22, 2013

    • Darren

That's a nasty cough you have there Amanda. Are you sure you are well enough to go into work tomorrow? :)

      March 22, 2013

  • Bruce D.

Due to some changes in my schedule my attendance is now tentative. Hope I make it!

    March 22, 2013

  • Roger T.

Well it turns out that Leigh can't attend, but I'll be there. Which means I have plenty of room if someone wants to car pool. Hey Karl, you live here in San Francisco don't you. Shoot me an email if your interested. Roger

    March 21, 2013

  • Atul M.

I will be going to there from West SJ. Mark, we could carpool. Anyone else wants to carpool, please send me an email from this web site then we can communicate offline using emails.

Here is a note from our Alan, our guide.

I think the best place to meet will be at the yard gate. The official address is 5550 Niles Canyon Road (State HY 84) Sunol 94586,1 3/4 miles west of Sunol.

We're still on for 9AM on Saturday. Dave had to travel to the UK for work, so I guess I'll be the host for this meetup.

Looking forward to seeing you all next weekend.

From a logistical point of view, how much walking/hauling is involved? I imagine a lot.
I have a monorail camera, not a field camera. I got the rail camera figuring home use or use within a short distance of the car. Anything more than a short distance and I would have to use my MF 6x6 camera, to save my back.

  • Mark

I am pretty sure that I will be able to make this meetup. Would be interested in carpooling if anybody else is driving up from San Jose.

I'll put yes for now but will need to figure out my schedule closer to the actual date.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
