Author Event - Brandon Sanderson

  • Feb 18, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Brandon Sanderson, author of the phenomenal epic fantasy Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive series (book 1, The Way of Kings, is available), the concluding 3 volumes of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, as well as Elantris and Warbreaker, is coming to the area on tour for A Memory of Light, the finale to the Wheel of Time. The event will include a brief Q&A and a signing. Harriet McDougal, Robert Jordan's widow, will also be attending, along with the audiobook narrators: Kate Reading & Michael Kramer. This event falls on the President's Day holiday this year.

  1. As a courtesy to the store, please consider buying the book you wish to be signed at the store, or save your receipt from another Books-A-Million. If you already own everything you can possibly buy, we do strongly urge you to at least buy another book at the store on the day of the event. Brick-and-mortar stores are struggling these days, and author tours depend very heavily on finding venues like these, so your patronage is appreciated.
  2. Tickets for the signing will be available starting on Sunday February 17 at 2pm. Each ticket will entitle you to have up to 3 books signed. We will do our best to secure as many as possible, but we can make no guarantees that we'll get enough for all of us
  3. Please try to arrive early! We're expecting the event to be packed. The signing will be standing room only.

We've previously discussed several of Sanderson's books in April 2009 (Mistborn: The Final Empire), January 2011 (Warbreaker), and January 2013 (Mistborn: The Alloy of Law).

The following bio is taken from Sanderson's website, and here's a link to the blog posts about Brandon's selection to finish WoT and his decision to split the final book into 3 novels:

Brandon Sanderson was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska and now lives in Provo, Utah. Unlike a lot of writers, he wasn't born wanting to write books. The bug didn't hit him until he was in junior high, when a teacher handed him a fantasy novel for the first time.

After that, he was a goner. He went to Brigham Young University as a chemistry major, but his secret passion was to become a fantasy novelist. He eventually changed his major to English, and started writing novels compulsively.

In 2003, he finally managed to sell a book (his sixth) to Tor. At that time, he was writing his thirteenth novel and working a graveyard shift at a local hotel so that he could have time to write while he put himself through graduate school. (He eventually got a Master's in creative writing.)

In December 2007 Brandon was chosen by Harriet McDougal Rigney to complete Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series after his untimely passing.

The only author to make the short list for the David Gemmell Legend Award six times in four years, Brandon won that award in 2011 for The Way of Kings. He has also won the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice award for Best Epic Fantasy twice and has been nominated three other years. He was twice nominated for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. He has hit the New York Times Hardcover Fiction Best-Seller List seven times. Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians was optioned for film by DreamWorks Animation, Mistborn was optioned by Paloppa Pictures, and a Mistborn video game will be released by Little Orbit in 2013 for all platforms. Brandon's books have been published in over twenty languages.

Was just there and didn't see anyone. Vijay, I just now saw your message about where you are sitting. <SIGH>. Next time I'll plan better and get there early & check updates first

@John: Sorry we missed you! I know most of our events are a huge trek for you now, but we'll be coming to the Ren Fair in the fall. Hope you can join us then!

Hopefully I wouldn't be traveling again. Turns out I live about 2 miles away from where the Ren Fair is held. :-)

Really fun day! Had a great time hanging out before the event, and the reading by the audiobook narrators was amazing, the q&a was fun, and the signing didn't take too long, and all of the signers were awesome to interact with.

Plus, got a free copy of Way of Kings, which totally made my day. :-) Thanks to everyone who made the trek out!

For anyone that can't find us at the q&a (I'm wearing a dark gray button-down and jeans), we'll be #80 in the signing queue. See you all tonight!

Unfortunately, my presence is required elsewhere. I'll have to hop on the next time he's in town.

Just fyi: BaM is located between Modell's Sporting Goods and the Cinemark. Parking may be really hard to find (if today was any indication).

A short reading & q&A will be followed by the signing. I was able to snag 6 tickets, which may not be enough for everybody, but if we're willing to be a little flexible and if some of us have less than 3 items we want signed, we can all manage. If anyone has a good camera they can bring, I'd love for us to get a group photo with Sanderson, if there's time.

They're stocked with most of the recent WoT books, Elantris, Warbreaker, Way of Kings, and the Mistborn trilogy. The novellas and Alloy of Law were not on the table they had set up, but I did see at least one Alloy left on the main shelves. You can also bring your own copies to sign and buy something else at the store (e.g. a book we'll be reading later in the year)

@Wes: I'm still planning on going up early. Want to aim for about 3pm at Dave & Buster's? Or were you thinking earlier?

Sounds like a plan. I have your cell, and I will give you a call when I am at DuPont Circle. I will bring my camera.

So I've got two spots left if anyone wants to carpool. Vijay, I'm happy to go early, if you want to hitch a ride and hit Dave & Busters. I've got off that day too and wouldn't mind a day unwinding. Madeleine, you're the one I have booked for the first spot. When are you free to leave to go up to MD?

And where is a good place to meet to start? I can drive out to Alexandria, if that'd be better, or you guys can come into DC (gasp - I know!) if you want to start off closer.

Your cat? I seem to be missing something. Anyway, I figured I would be driving by myself since no one was jumping on my own offer of a car.

    • Wes R.

Sorry, that was supposed to be car, Matthew. Typing on my phone!

The book store generally decides the forum and whether there will be a question and answer. After going to some great ones in Ellicot City Barnes & Nobel, where the authors talked and did a question and answer. I was disappointing by Bethesda's B&N signing where we stood in lines as groups for hours, to just get a signing and photo op with Janet Evanovich. And then at Kim Harrison's signing last year... At Books-A-Million in Anne Arundle Mall, which is where this is taking place, they again didn't have a question and answer or a author talk. Kim Harrison's husband came down the line and talked to us all but not the same. After questioning this way of signings, I was told multiple times that it is the location that decides to either set up a question and answer or not. I would not go back to Books-A-Million for a signing unless I knew that there would be a author question & answer. I would rather go for the talk and questions than the signing.

That is how it's generally done, but to clarify, all the details on the meetup are directly from the event coordinator at BAM.

I'm willing to drive, if folks will pitch in for gas. I can take 3 more comfortably.

    February 10, 2013

    • Madeleine

I would love to hitch a ride and am more than happy to contribute for gas.

Does anyone want to try and carpool to get there?
