Liquid Courage (Happy Hour - no reading required!)

Please join us for a happy hour and get-together, aimed to fortify the resolve and expand the awkwardness-tolerance of any members attending the Speed Dating for Science Fiction and Fantasy Lovers event immediately afterwards, and to provide everyone else with general entertainment at our expense. You do not have to attend the speed dating in order to enjoy this happy hour. We held a happy hour before speed dating last November, and we had an absolute blast.

Speed dating can be a bit stressful or intimidating if you've never given it a try, so relaxing with your friends from the group beforehand should help everyone go into the speed dating event with a little more ease and confidence. And for our single members, whether or not you think you're seriously interested in meeting someone, we do urge you to come out to the speed dating event (treat it as an anthropological study into the courtship rituals of our people); at the very least you'll probably end up with some amusing stories, and who knows, you might meet someone awesome.

Nando's is a great South African casual dining chain with a Portuguese-Mozambican theme. The sangria and wine and beer lists are quite good, and the food is delicious. Check out the menu here. Happy Hour pricing (including half price pitchers of Sangria) will last until 6pm, so please try to arrive on time to take advantage of it.

UPDATE: Nando's has generously reserved their entire outdoor patio for us, so we'll have plenty of space to circulate and enjoy the happy hour. But the weather is likely to be between 85-90 degrees (though we'll be in a courtyard with some good airflow), so if you're planning on speed dating afterwards, you may want to plan your makeup and outfits accordingly.

Directions and parking information for Pentagon Row can be found here.

Also, just a reminder to anyone that did speed date, if you want to try for "worst speed date of the night" and win a gift certificate to Houlihan's, if you're a guy, message me here with your tale of woe:
    http://www.meetup.com/SFFBookClub/message/?recipientId=9531792

If you're a lady, message Vernieda here: http://www.meetup.com/SFFBookClub/message/?recipientId=13450574

It sounds like most everyone had a pleasant experience, so we may have to struggle to find someone to award this to, but since you braved the event with us, we'd like to open up the chance to any who feel they've earned it. :)

For anyone who attended speed dating, I've updated the message board with some post-event guidance/tips, and opened it to feedback on the speed dating experience or questions you may have. We should be getting an e-mail within the next day or so that the online system is activated, but remember it will only be available for 10 days! http://www.meetup.com/SFFBookClub/messages/boards/thread/32910802#[masked]

Please leave your reviews of the happy hour on this comment thread, but please take any discussion or questions from speed dating over to the message board, so as not to clog everyone's inboxes. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a fantastic happy hour. It was especially great to have so many new members join us!

Just a reminder for any of our new members, we'll be on the outdoor patio. I'm in an olive green shirt and jeans.

Hi everyone, just 2 quick points on the post-happy hour speed dating:
    1) If you haven't yet registered for speed dating and want the 50% discount, you must register online. If you're still on the fence, chances are you'll still be able to register in person (though those odds are better for men than women).

    2) Registration for the speed dating will begin @ 7, and actual dating will start around 7:20 and should last about 1.5 hours.

@All: See you all tomorrow! And come thirsty and hungry, Nando's has great food and drink selections. :-)

Hi everyone, just a quick note: Nando's has generously reserved their entire outdoor patio for us, so we'll have plenty of space to circulate and enjoy the happy hour (those that came in November may remember that we were packed a bit too tightly into the restaurant). However, the weather is likely to be between 85-90 degrees (though we'll be in a courtyard with some good airflow, so I don't think it'll be too uncomfortable). If you're planning on speed dating afterwards, you may wish to plan your makeup and outfits accordingly. See you in a couple days!

If anyone is interested in going to the Science Fiction Date Night, I have a reservation that I don't really need anymore. I can still go and meet people but presently I would like to offer my seat to anyone who is on the fence about going.

Hi everyone! I hope you're all excited for Saturday's happy hour! Please remember that guests are welcome and that the happy hour is open to ALL our members.

For those that are thinking about or planning to attend the Speed Dating for Science Fiction and Fantasy Fans event afterward:
I know a few people are new to speed dating or nervous or skeptical about the whole affair: It's really very low-key and fun. I've added some pointers on what to expect and how to prep if you wish to, and also a pdf with some unconventional questions I think can make speed dates a lot more interesting and memorable than the usual boring spiels. Check it out here: http://www.meetup.com/SFFBookClub/messages/boards/thread/32910802#[masked]

Lastly, please remember that to receive the 50% discount for our group you need to buy your speed dating ticket online beforehand.

It's my cousins birthday and I'll be driving to Hampton Roads.

For anyone planning on participating in the speed dating, the event starts to fill up in the week or so prior. Please buy your tickets soon ( http://www.prosinthecity.com/event/speed-dating-washington-dc-11466 ), and don't forget to use the promo code Sci11466 to get the 50% discount.

Eventually, the event will probably say that they've capped one of the genders (usually women, since they sign up earlier and often in pairs or trios), don't be discouraged. You can still buy a ticket if you also sign up a male (keeping the gender ratios even). If needed, just use this comment thread to find any guy that hasn't yet bought his ticket, and you can sync up so that both of you can attend.

Again, though, you *don't* need to participate in the speed dating to attend the happy hour. For anyone on the fence, however, the speed dating is about as easy-going and stress-free a singles experience as you'll find, and you'll have the solidarity of a platoon of friends. :)

Vijay, do we need to make reservations with you or give someone money in advance for this one, or do we just show up and start drinking?

    May 16, 2013

    • Vijay

For attending the happy hour, the only reservation you need is to RSVP here. As for payment, we're all individually responsible for whatever we eat or drink, but the nice thing is that at Nando's, you actually order and pay at the counter and then they deliver food/drinks to the table, so there usually aren't tabs to worry about or keep track of. If you split a pitcher or appetizer with others at the event, please remember to chip in with whomever pays for it.

For any attending the speed dating, you will need to reserve your spot in advance. The details (including the reservation link and our promo code) are here: http://www.meetup.com...

This is going to be a great happy hour; hope you're all looking forward to it as much as I am!

Running an event for my own group the next day, so I may not be able to make this one; I'll update my RSVP if this becomes the case. I won't be doing the speed dating thing at any rate.

For what it's worth for those attending the event afterwards- I went last time, it was incredibly low pressure, very enjoyable, and I met a guy there that I have been dating for 4 months. This was my first and only speed dating experience, and heading to the happy hour before really put me in the right mindset. If you're on the fence, like I was, I recommend giving it a shot- all of the people I talked to afterwards were glad they did. Even if you don't meet the future Mr/Mrs it's worth it just for all the book recommends you get from the people there!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
