CapClave 2013 (Convention Weekend)

CapClave 2013 is our area's own science fiction and fantasy convention. It's being held this year in Gaithersburg, MD and will run from October 11-13, 2013. .

If you've never tried the con scene, this is a great one to start with. It's small and has a literary focus, so you won't need to worry about huge crowds or cosplay hordes or an unfamiliar city. And it's amazing how much access you can get to famous authors at a con of this size. With George R.R. Martin as this year's guest of honor, this really is an amazing opportunity.

From the website:

Capclave is a small relaxed literary convention with a program that usually focuses on the short fiction form. Our Guests of Honor and other notable authors, editors, artists, and fans of the short fiction form will explore the creation and enjoyment of short fantasy and science fiction genre stories.

Here's a preliminary look at the 2013 programming. Capclave includes author readings, panel discussions, and writers' workshops. There's also likely to be a mass book signing on Saturday evening.

Parking and wifi will be free. There are many restaurants near the hotel for lunch, and we will likely go out for meals together, depending on people's schedules.

Registration is currently available for $60 (through the end of September). There is a special rate of $30 for military, military dependents, and students. With Martin as GoH this year, there's a significant chance that memberships will sell out well in advance of the con, so please don't delay! If you'd like to stay at the convention hotel, room rates are $122/night for a king with sleeper sofa, and you can book here. I expect most of us will be commuting.

Note: When RSVPing, please answer the question requesting your cell #, so that we can coordinate on-site.

Enjoyed hanging out with the Meetup! It was a treat to see GRRM, and I discovered some interesting small press publications. The panel discussions that I got to attend were decent.

Phenomenal weekend. Thanks to everyone for coming out and making it so much fun. Thanks to Sam for taking such good care of us, and especially to everyone who volunteered. A lot of people said really nice things about that. :-)

Personal kudos to Mike and Sweth for the scotch they bought too. :-)

Absolutely can't wait for next year!

Half an iced coffee doesn't count. You are owed a beverage as well.

This was my first con and really wasn’t sure about it, but it turned out to be an excellent time. Like any event there were some panels I liked and some ahhh. Like our book sessions the panels were interesting. Some I didn’t agree with but over all ok to hear different view points. I’m was glad to hear at least 45 minutes of Martin’s new book in the Fire and Ice series, at least it’s started. It was interesting hearing Martin talk, some very restrained and good answers to questions, others hearing his trash talk and lewd behavior in his earlier (???) years. But one thing…he needs to work on his beard. I never noticed it with pictures, but he really needs to grow that thing out. I can’t write interesting stories, but I can grow a real beard. :) I’m just saying…

    9 · October 16, 2013

I cannot deny having the thought "we've got better beards than that" multiple times during the con...

Enjoyed meeting more of you all, seeing those I've met before again; and of course, the con. Some life issues that have prevented me from coming to book discussions have cleared up, so I look forward to seeing you again in the future!

I am glad so many people came and had fun. This was the biggest Capclave ever! Thanks to everyone who volunteered. A number of people said the bigger size wouldn't have been possible without volunteers' help.

All, woke up feeling nauseous. I'm not sure I'm going to make it out today.

Would someone let Sam know that I will probably not make it for the 10am registration and that I"m sorry :-( I'm not sure that he checks the comments.

Had a great time at the con. Lots of good panels and other activities. Very good idea about the book club ribbons for our badges - really made it a lot easier to identify our folks that I hadn't met at other activities.

Just as an FYI, it's doubtful I'll be using text messages to coordinate that often this weekend. The venue and con are small enough that we should be running into fellow book club members (or tripping over each other) near constantly.

If this is your first meetup and you want to link up or say hi, I'm wearing a charcoal gray t-shirt and khaki cargo pants, and I'm south asian, so I should not be too hard to spot.

Registration opens at 3! I'm here early in the lobby. See you all soon!

  • Ayesha

I didn't get an advance ticket...Do you think it's still possible I'll get into any events?

    October 3, 2013

    • Vijay

@Ayesha: They definitely are planning on taking registrations at the door, it looks like. If you show up as close to 3pm as possible next Friday to register, you'll maximize your chances of getting a membership. As for the specialty workshops, you can try e-mailing the coordinator and letting her know you're definitely planning on coming but will be registering at the door. She may be willing to hold spots for you.

The downloadable program grid and the program guide are up on the CapClave page under 'printable materials' (restaurant guide also available on that page). For newbies, the program guide is worth looking at and the program grid is handy if you want to mark up a paper copy for events you might want to attend.

Since CapClave's schedule is packed with so much awesome, I'm not sure how easy it will be to arrange a large group dinner or lunch during the con itself (especially given our 50+ person group). But I did have a thought for a truffle factory tour at Spagnvola, a Gaithersburg farm-to-boutique chocolatier. How many people would be *seriously* interested in attending the factory tour in Gaithersburg after the convention on Sunday at 4:30 PM? Please 'Like' this comment to show that you're genuinely interested and likely to attend, so I have a rough headcount. Thanks!

Hmm. So, as per a comment thread below, I want to hit Pacifica Cafe, as there just aren't that many places on this side of this continent where I can get Eight Treasure Duck. But now that Vijay points it out, there aren't many meal-convenient times for doing so. If anyone might be up for a post-Chocolateria Shanghainese chowdown, let me know, as that may be what I end up doing.

(Interstitial drinks to separate chocolate and duck might be necessary, if anyone wants to join for those, and as Sunday is my birthday, the first round is on me.)

Looks great! As you say, however, there is so much on the convention schedule that I don't know when I'll find time to eat at all! I expect to eat most of my meals in the hotel. I'm actually staying there on Friday and Saturday night, since I don't have a car, but if something works out, I'd love to dine with you all. Still, I think I'll have to play it by ear. I'll definitely bringing energy bars to get me through lunch times. I don't want to miss any exciting events for something as mundane as food! ;)

    October 6, 2013

    • Sweth C.

Speaking of meals: there are some pretty good eats hidden near there, including Pacifica Cafe, which is one of the better Shanghainese places around. Some of the better dishes there require 48 hours notice, so I may end up putting in an order on Fri for lunch there on Sunday if anyone wants to join.

Now if only we could share schedules so I knew who else is interested in the panels I am attending!

      2 · October 7, 2013

    • Sweth C.

It would be pretty straightfoward to convert the schedule to a shared Google Spreadsheet that people could mark their sessions-of-interest in. Wouldn't be very mobile-device-friendly, though, but if anyone is interested, let me know and I can throw that together.

      October 7, 2013

  • Tom C.

While Laura and I will be at Capclave, I never hear my cell phone when I'm there (I refuse to reset my ring tone to a baby screaming in agony, which is about the only thing that could cut through the convention chatter). We'll see you guys around! For us to catch up with you at a particular time, we'd need to know where you intend to meet up, so I'm not signing up for this meetup, but do know that we'll be there. and that we'll look for all of you.

So, as a con newbie who decided to take to heart Vijay's incessant exhortations that I'll never have a better opportunity to ease myself into the con world: any tips on must-attend sessions?

    September 26, 2013

    • Debbie H

It really comes down to what sort of topics or activities you are interested in. Take a look at the entire schedule (keep scrolling down the page) to get to the short descriptions of the panels, workshops, readings, filking (music), parties, presentations etc.. Pick out your favorite sort of topic or activity for the times you'll be able to attend and make sure to leave some time to visit the con suite and dealer's room. If bookclub members are going to get together for a meal that's nice, too.

      1 · September 29, 2013

    • Samuel L.

I agree, go to the panel for new people. Also, I recommend going to at least a couple of readings just to get a sense of who the authors are.

      2 · September 30, 2013

  • Vijay

Hi everyone, just a reminder that if you haven't yet bought your CapClave membership, you should do so this week! Tickets are only available online until September 30. With George R.R. Martin as this year's guest of honor, it's doubtful whether many tickets, if any, will be available at the door.

    Register here: http://www.capclave.org/capclave/capclave13/registration.php

Jennifer - Most panels are open to everyone. This con is small enough that you should be able to get into the panels you want - you just show up at the assigned room at the right time and take a seat. There may be some special events or workshops that have attendance caps and require prior sign up, but I'll let Sam provide more details on those.

Hi Vijay and Amelia! Thanks for writing back! I am very excited about my first convention - living in Europe, I used to read about the great stuff going on here in the States and wish I could be here for it. I'll keep a look out for news from Sam about workshops that require sign-up. It looks like a great events list! I am looking forward to meeting you guys too.
