Dragon*Con 2013 (Convention Weekend)

Dragon*Con, one of the country's best science fiction and fantasy convention, is being held this Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta! Dragon*Con is a large (~50k attendees) convention with hundreds of events, a huge parade, and an amazing list of authors and celebrities in attendance. The con will also include excellent panel discussions, live performances, autograph and reading sessions, mass gaming, burlesque, a puppet slam, and much more.

Among the huge list of celebrity guests are the following authors:

  • Larry Niven
  • Jodi Lynn Nye
  • Robert J. Sawyer
  • Jim Butcher
  • Laurell K Hamilton
  • Gene Wolfe
  • Timothy Zahn
  • Lev Grossman
  • Sherrilyn Kenyon
  • Katherine Kurtz
  • Todd McCaffrey
  • Mike Resnick
  • John D. Ringo
  • Jack Campbell
  • Michael A. Stackpole
  • Aaron Allston
  • Cherie Priest
  • Rebecca Moesta
  • Janny Wurts

Since several members have expressed an interest in attending, we'll use this meetup to let members coordinate flights, roomsharing, and generally hanging out during the convention. The convention runs from the evening of Thursday August 29 through Monday September 2.

For more information, and to register for the convention, please visit the Dragon*Con website.

Registration is currently $150. Please don't delay in signing up!

We have a few rooms booked at the Hilton Atlanta, one of the main host hotels. If you're interested, please let us know so we can determine whether we can fit you into our room block (Update: our room block is now full). Alternatively, there are a number of overflow hotels available for Dragon*Con, but they are selling out fast!

Atlanta is accessible by plane, train and car, though given the length of the trip, most of us are planning on flying. The con has arranged a 5-10% discount on flights from Delta, but they're about the same as the price you'll get on most deal sites. Nonstop flights are available from DCA, IAD, and BWI.

Thanks to everyone who came with us to DragonCon! I had a great time overall, and while I probably wouldn't want to go every year, it was definitely worth the trip.

I managed to get a ride from someone in NoVA who is going. I hope they can give a ride back. Now I'm looking for someone who has a spot for me at their hotel. Hopefully inexpensive. I don't know if I need to buy a sleeping bag yet. I have to pay for reg, food, and gas. This is my first time going or ever doing something like this. Once I get a room spot, I'll change my rsvp to going.

I'm getting really intimidated about going because many of the Dragon Con groups* have room rates per night vs the whole weekend. I want to pay about $100+ for that whole weekend. Not per night. I can't afford that. Can anyone help or guide me?

There is a pretty active Twitter feed you can access off the Dragon Con App. I have definitely seen room and roommate postings there, although I don't know what the prices are. Good luck.

Hope everyone's getting excited for the con in a few days! A few quick things I wanted to mention:

    (1) Please make sure you remember to bring the blue postcard you received in the mail after registering for DragonCon!

    (2) The weather is looking pretty good, with daytime temperatures 90 and below and evening temps in the 70s. But there's a chance of some isolated thunderstorms, so please pack accordingly.

    (3) The mobile app is available for download in your app store (assuming you have a smartphone): http://app.core-apps.com/dragoncon13 and the pocket program is also available: http://advertising.dragoncon.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/2013-DragonCon-PocketProgram-webversion.pdf as is a letter-sized schedule grid: http://advertising.dragoncon.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/2013-Grids.pdf

I'm sorry I can't make it this year, I'm really bummed. I hope you are able to find someone to take my spot in the room.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
