January's Writers Meetup

Whether you're currently writing, gave up but want to restart, or have always wanted to and are serious about getting started ... please join us for our monthly writers meetup. This session is a chance to discuss ideas, work through problems or roadblocks, and get some writing done. Space is limited for this event, but a waiting list is available. We will do everything we can to accommodate as many writers as possible without compromising the quality of the session. Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!* Also, it is important that you arrive on time (noon) so that we can get the most out of the session without disruptions.

This will be our first meeting of 2014, and we'll be using the time to go through a writing exercise, set realistic and achievable goals for our writing, explore and practice writing a speculative fiction subgenre, and deepen our understanding of the craft of writing, as well as talk through any plot difficulties or roadblocks you're experiencing. There will also be an opportunity to buckle down and get some serious writing done. January's subgenre focus will be on dystopian/post-apocalyptic fiction. Coming out of the incredible amount of writing so many achieved during NaNoWriMo 2013, January's craft focus will be on completing your story, specifically not getting trapped in the morass of The Middle and how to coherently reach The End.

We will be working through two writing exercises during the session, so please bring laptops or notebooks (as you prefer) and be prepared to write. George Mason Library is located at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Hillbrook Drive. We'll be meeting in the George Mason Meeting Room (we have the room until 5pm). There will be free wi-fi and power outlets available. There are also a number of great food options within a very short drive, including Afghan, Korean, Chinese, pizza and Popeye's, if people want to grab food during or after.

*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For writers meetups, a no-show will prohibit you from attending another writers meetup for 2 months after the no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm two nights before a meeting. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Just a final reminder that we're at George Mason library in Annandale (and not Kingstowne or Pohick). Also , it's very important that we all arrive on time, so please budget time for any food runs before the meetup accordingly. Thanks, and see you soon!

To all you fellow writers that use an iPad:
I'm new to the iPad (as my laptop recently died) and I need suggestions for your favorite writing or office style apps for the iPad so I'm ready to go for the meetup
    thanks!

Well if your want a Scrivener equivalent there is Storyist but it can take a bit to figure out ways to work with it in relation to other office tools. Google Drive is a very decent option if you like their cloud base system, that is really the biggest draw, if you like Google then Google will treat you right. Pages is a very decent tool and they've improved it since first releasing it. It may not have all the best options in one place but it is a great start and can be exported to Office with little fuss.

I'm a fan of Notebook - I've even shelled out for the paid version. It synchronizes with Dropbox and can store everything in a plain text format which is easy to transport with cut and paste. There's a free version you can try if you like.

Hi, everyone! I hope you're excited for next weekend's writers meetup. We've got a lot of great things planned for this year!

If your availability has changed, however, please update your RSVP to give someone on the waitlist a chance to attend. Also, just a reminder that we'll be at George Mason Regional Library in Annandale for the first time. Thanks.

Do you have to attend this workshop before being admitted to the SFFBC Writer's Group? (http://www.meetup.com/SFFBookClubWriters/)

    December 13, 2013

    • Vijay

Yes, you do. The writers group site is just a private workspace.
