September's Fantasy - The Black Prism by Brent Weeks

Please join us as we discuss The Black Prism by Brent Weeks, book 1 of The Lightbringer series. Weeks is better known for his phenomenal debut series, The Night Angel trilogy, which explores the growth of a young guild rat as he apprentices himself into the sinister world of mystical assassins. This book is a little closer to traditional fantasy (and isn't quite as dark, so far), and Weeks' writing has clearly matured (his world-building is a little more clean and effective, his characters are complex in multiple dimensions, and he introduces a complex system of magic while threading wry humor throughout). Please keep your RSVP updated and accurate!* Space is limited for this event. If it fills up, please add yourself to the waiting list if interested. The smaller morning session can be found here.

From Amazon:

Gavin Guile is the Prism, the most powerful man in the world. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. Yet Prisms never last, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live: Five years to achieve five impossible goals.

But when Guile discovers he has a son, born in a far kingdom after the war that put him in power, he must decide how much he's willing to pay to protect a secret that could tear his world apart.

*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For book discussions, 3 no-shows in a rolling 3-month period will prohibit you from attending any other book discussion for 2 months after your last no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm the night before a discussion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

A very/VERY good meetup! And, for a book that had almost ALL of us in violent agreement about the quality - - we still managed to have a very detailed discussion. A fun, engaged, and enjoyable experience!

FYI to all - the storm today left parts of Springfield w/o power (my power is STILL out!). But, as of 9 p.m. tonight, Houllihan's HAS power!!! I did a drive-by to check. So, we should be okay for our sessions tomorrow!

Loved this book! In fact, I loved it so much, I went ahead and pre-ordered the next book and then read his Night Angel trilogy. It's been awhile since an author has caught my attention like this

Hi everyone, hope you're enjoying the book so far. If your schedule has changed and you won't be able to attend, please update your RSVP to give someone on the waitlist a chance. Thanks!

@Crystal - - For what it's worth, I started it a few months ago, and gave it a cursory 50 pages, then put it aside (it wasn't bad - just didn't grip me!). But, based on Vijay (and others) saying to keep going, I'm starting again. Now, on p. 160-something, and it's pretty darn interesting. VERY nifty system of magic, and the character interactions are clever and fun. Gonna stick w/ it!!!

I will be on vacation (yay!) so I will not be able to go to this meetup (boo!). But I'm going to read the book anyway, because apparently it's awesome. Have fun without me!

@Kat - - No! Don't dispair!!! As Vijay mentioned originally, we open up an a.m. session about 2 weeks before the event, so there are TWO sessions. You'll then see a wild flurry of activity - - those signing for morning, those changing to morning, those being added from the Waiting List, those that end up not being able to make it after all, etc. Our experience has been that, between both sessions, pretty much everybody makes it to one of the discussions! Hope to see you soon!

I tought I did go to the website to reply. That's because the system requested me to login to the website to reply. Thank you for your comments. It doesn't matter because I never check my email in the evenings, so I'll never make it to any of these discussions.

Also, the mobile app is terrible and does not update properly OR regularly so beware of this issue too! :)

@Kat - To add to Vijay's comment...please keep in mind that the email notices are generated as a snapshot in time - the time that the email is first sent out, and NOT the time you receive it!!! Then, as Vijay so clearly pointed out, the time you respond is yet a farther point in time. Everybody just needs to get that this is how it works! But, to be safe, RSVP from the website (NOT the email!!!), to see the real-time status of the available slots. Yet, no worries! You'll probably get in!

  • Vijay

@Kat: To clarify, when the e-mail announcement was *sent* yesterday at 6:34pm, there were 12 open slots. By the time you RSVPed this morning at 9:54am, the event had filled up and a waiting list formed. Our events are fairly popular, which is why so many of our members respond quickly to event announcements.

But between the morning session we'll announce in late August and turnover on this event, we should be able to get everyone into a session.

When I said yes to this meetup, there were 12 people going and no waiting list. Then I get an email that says I'm on the waiting list. Not a good thing!!!!!!!!
