Blackbeard Pirate Festival (Overnight Excursion)

Come join us for a 2-day excursion to the Blackbeard Pirate Festival in Hampton, Virginia! We had such a great time at the Maryland Renaissance Festival in October, and this looks like it may be even more awesome. The festival includes music, food, drinks, crafts markets, comedy shows, and re-enactments, both of individual combat and actual naval battles! The 2012 schedule is now available! Among the highlights are sea battle reenactments, fireworks, a birds of prey exhibition, an angry foul-mouthed bird (I think?), and lots of music and sing-alongs.

This will be a 2-day meetup, so please expect it to take all day Saturday and Sunday June 2nd and 3rd. The event itself is free to the public, but you will be responsible for other costs associated with lodging, transportation, food & drink, and any shopping you wish to do.

Although you can choose to find your own accommodations, most of us will be staying at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina on the waterfront, so we won't have to do any driving once we arrive. You will be responsible for booking your own accommodations, but please feel free to use the comments thread (or individually message other members) if you'd like to find a roommate.

We will be congregating at a park & ride in Burke, VA to carpool down to the Festival. This will be a good staging point at which many of us can leave our vehicles over the weekend, and it should only be a 3-hour drive down to Hampton from here. If you prefer to arrive independently, please aim for around 12-1pm on June 2nd, and bear in mind that the festival is 3-4 hours from our area, depending on where you're starting from. The car ride down and back will be part of the fun, though, so you are welcome to carpool with us.

  • When RSVPing, you will be asked to answer 4 questions, including your cellphone # . Please include it in the answer section and do not post it as a comment or in the RSVP text box. Your cell # will be kept private, and is just for the sake of coordination/emergencies. If you RSVP through the Meetup App, please make sure to log onto the main site and update your RSVP with answers to the question.
  • We encourage you to dress in costume.
  • Please bring cameras with you! You may also want to bring a backpack to carry your purchases. Also, bring ID and cash (in case credit card machines go down).
  • A week or so before the Festival, I'll post details on how we can stay in contact with each other during the Festival and other critical info.

@David: Yes, though it's a bit slow to do them one at a time.

Can we upload them with the app?

  • Vijay

Thanks for uploading those photos, Wendy! Anyone else that has pictures from the weekend, *please* upload them to the meetup site as well (just click "Add Photos" under the event title above). Thanks!

The festival persevered on despite the tornado, which was pretty impressive, but on the whole it wasn't everything I hoped it could be. It might get better in future years, and if anyone's really into pirates I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot, but I think that the Maryland Ren Fest and other cons might be more fun for us to hold meetups around.

Going in a group of friends made this a lot more fun, though. :) Thanks to everyone for a great weekend!

I definitely think the tornado affected the festival and they did as well as could be expected. The people were great as usual, but I think this isn't really the type of event to do on an annual basis.

As always, the people were absolutely amazing, and I had a wonderful time. The festival itself was smaller than I expected, and had been hit hard by the tornado. Although everyone had a great time in spite of a few setbacks, I preferred the Balticon weekend overall, and would prefer the Ren Faire to the Pirate Festival. ARGH!

Just got through. We're still on. The hotel is okay and the festival is continuing on. :-)

I think it's still going to be an awesome trip!

Hi everyone. Hampton got a little banged up by a tornado tonight. I think we'll still be okay for tomorrow, assuming the hotel gets power back and the damage is minimal. I'll check in with them in the morning, and if there's any reason we have to cancel, I'll send out a text as early as possible. But I'm pretty confident we'll be on for tomorrow. If you don't hear from me, we're a go. :-)

    Thanks!

    @Wendy: Thanks!

@All: Hope you've all had a hail- and tornado-free evening. Drive safely tomorrow! Also, if carpooling last chance to request coffee!

Wow, it's a good thing we didn't go for all three days. I heard the weather was pretty crazy down in Hampton too!

Coffee with lots of cream and sugar (there's a joke in there somewhere)...also, I will be bringing sobe ... It was on sale.

Actually, before I get too much coffee, how many people carpooling drink coffee? Either like this comment OR post a reply comment if you do (please don't do both). If you'd prefer an iced coffee, put it in your comment please. If you're not carpooling, please disregard.

@Melinda: I just sent out an e-mail, but the short answer is that I'll text you once we arrive and settle in, and we'll take it from there. :-) Travel safe, and see you on Saturday!

Try Hancock Fabrics. I saw some peasant skirts there. There's one in Manassas and Alexandria.

    May 29, 2012

  • Lisa K.

Argh!!! (And not in a good way)...I forgot that part of my intended costume for this weekend was borrowed. Anyone have suggestion on where to get a volumunous black peasant skirt? I guess I'll just have to buy a proper pirate/cavalier hat at the fest (sigh...forced to shop ....)

Since we're only 4 days away, I'd like to start coordinating the details.

If your availability or guest count has changed, please update your RSVP asap!

If your transportation (carpooling Y/N, driving Y/N) or lodging situation/preferences have changed, please click "Change your RSVP" in the green "Your RSVP: Yes" box, and hit RSVP to advance to the questions page.

Please try to get your updates in TODAY (if any), so we can sort out carpooling Wednesday and Thursday.

    Thanks, everyone!

The 2012 Schedule is now up! http://blackbeardfestival.com/schedule.html
We'll be arriving in plenty of time for the major sea battle reenactment on Saturday. Also, there'll be fireworks that night!

If your availability, guestcount, or transportation/lodging plans have changed, please update your RSVP on the main site (not the app) so you can revise your answers to the RSVP questions. Thanks!

Only 1 month away for the pirate festival! If anyone hasn't yet booked their accommodations, please do so ASAP!

It looks like the Crowne Plaza may be full, but there are many other hotels and motels in the area, and there is parking available at and near the festival.

There is a piratewear vendor (possibly also ware vendor) at the Virginia Renaissance Fair called Cover Dem Bones. The fair runs from May 12 through June 10 (obviously not useful after June 2). I am planning on going on May 12 or 13.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
