Come join us for a 2-day excursion to the Blackbeard Pirate Festival in Hampton, Virginia! We had such a great time at the Maryland Renaissance Festival in October, and this looks like it may be even more awesome. The festival includes music, food, drinks, crafts markets, comedy shows, and re-enactments, both of individual combat and actual naval battles! The 2012 schedule is now available! Among the highlights are sea battle reenactments, fireworks, a birds of prey exhibition, an angry foul-mouthed bird (I think?), and lots of music and sing-alongs.
This will be a 2-day meetup, so please expect it to take all day Saturday and Sunday June 2nd and 3rd. The event itself is free to the public, but you will be responsible for other costs associated with lodging, transportation, food & drink, and any shopping you wish to do.
Although you can choose to find your own accommodations, most of us will be staying at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina on the waterfront, so we won't have to do any driving once we arrive. You will be responsible for booking your own accommodations, but please feel free to use the comments thread (or individually message other members) if you'd like to find a roommate.
We will be congregating at a park & ride in Burke, VA to carpool down to the Festival. This will be a good staging point at which many of us can leave our vehicles over the weekend, and it should only be a 3-hour drive down to Hampton from here. If you prefer to arrive independently, please aim for around 12-1pm on June 2nd, and bear in mind that the festival is 3-4 hours from our area, depending on where you're starting from. The car ride down and back will be part of the fun, though, so you are welcome to carpool with us.
- When RSVPing, you will be asked to answer 4 questions, including your cellphone # . Please include it in the answer section and do not post it as a comment or in the RSVP text box. Your cell # will be kept private, and is just for the sake of coordination/emergencies. If you RSVP through the Meetup App, please make sure to log onto the main site and update your RSVP with answers to the question.
- We encourage you to dress in costume.
- Please bring cameras with you! You may also want to bring a backpack to carry your purchases. Also, bring ID and cash (in case credit card machines go down).
- A week or so before the Festival, I'll post details on how we can stay in contact with each other during the Festival and other critical info.
