Balticon 2012 (Convention Weekend)

Balticon 46, Maryland's regional science fiction convention, is being held this Memorial Day Weekend! Since several members have expressed an interest in attending, we'll use this meetup to let members coordinate rides, roomsharing, and generally hanging out during the convention. The convention runs from Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28.

For more information, and to register for the convention, please visit the Balticon 46 website. The Marriott Hunt Valley Inn is sold out, but there are alternative hotels to choose from, in particular the Embassy Suites Baltimore - North/Hunt Valley across the street. Please make sure to make your reservation ASAP. If you'd like to find a roommate, please use the Comments section below (or message other attendees individually). The same goes for carpooling.

Registration is $62. Please don't delay in signing up!

Hi, everyone. Just a request to *please* upload your Balticon pictures to the meetup site (just click "Add Photos" under the event title above). Thanks!

@Judy: This Tom Lehrer song does some subtraction in base 8 (starting at 2:30): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...

    1 · June 1, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

@Judy: Octal is just base eight (we normally count in base ten). So the counting numerals in octal go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 10 11 (where 10 is one 8 in the eights place and zero ones in the ones place). Counting in different bases is popular with computer scientists and mathematically inclined 5th graders.

  • Judy

@ Caroline: Dang, you've reached the limit of my math knowledge. And I was feeling so superior and multidisciplinary! Now I'll have to make obscure phonetic references to make myself feel better. What's Octal?

    June 1, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

@ Judy: And why doesn't that joke work in Octal? Because 7 10 11!

I feel better now. I thought I was suffering alone. I had such a great time hanging out with everyone, and VJ was a brilliant organizer. (Had lunch this week with a friend from London.) I had to check in all sorts of ways at work to do some major projects. Oh, the pain. I'm planning to go dark this weekend, but I'm sad I'm missing the pirate festival. You guys have fun!

  • Judy

Phew, thanks all! I also (finally) saw "The Avengers" as part of my therapy plan. I hope Bryan appreciates how much he's missed. Or maybe it would freak him out just a little...
    @Caroline: Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9!

    May 31, 2012

  • Lisa K.

@Vijay - today is the first day I physically checked into work. Turns out my allergies were an upper respiratory ickiness..

    May 31, 2012

  • Lisa K.

@Caroline: the pain, oh my God the pain!

    May 31, 2012

  • Amelia D.

@Vijay - You mentally checked back into work? Why would you do that? I'm making an overnight trip to avoid doing anything productive this week. Although I did write one sentence, which allowed me to be done with something and pass it on...

    May 31, 2012

  • Dave

@ Vijay I know how you feel. I miss Bryan too.

    May 31, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

Ok, Judy, how about a calculus joke?
A definite integral walks and orders 10 shots of whiskey. "You sure about that, buddy?" "Yeah, I know my limits."

    2 · May 31, 2012

  • Vijay

Today's the first day I've mentally checked back into work and gotten anything meaningful done. Missed you guys right after leaving. Especially Bryan, he was friends with what's-his-name, right? :-P

I think I'm suffering from PCWD (Post-Convention Withdrawal Disorder). Help! Someone tell me something intelligent, witty, and insightful! Make an obscure sci-fi reference! Tell a horrible pun!

    1 · May 31, 2012

  • Amelia D.

This was my first convention, and I had an awesome time! Going with my friends made it so much better. The panels ranged from good to amazing, and there was plenty of stuff to browse and buy (stuffed dragons! Books! Books! Oh, and more books!)

    May 31, 2012

  • Trish

So much fun to go to a con with a group. It was a great way to get to know meetup members better and enjoy the various activities at the con.

    May 29, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

That was possibly the most fun I've ever had at Balticon.

    May 29, 2012

  • Vijay

Absolutely amazing weekend! The con was awesome and the panels were interesting and fun for the most part. Had an absolute blast with all our members who joined us. And we are now the trivia champions of Balticon 46!!! Thanks to everyone who made this such a great weekend.

And remember, what was said at Balticon stays at Balticon! :-P

    May 29, 2012

  • Vernieda

What a fun time! Awesome con suite, great room parties, unexpected trivia champions (DeviantArt, really?!), and the most awesome hentai panel ever. And the people were great too. I guess. ;P

    May 28, 2012

  • Lisa K.

An amazing time! The con was more literary-minded in programming than I expected, but the panels were that much more interesting because of it. The group members, as always, are fantastic!

    May 28, 2012

  • Judy

I had an absolute blast! It's definitely much more fun to do the con in a group. @Vijay: thanks for your marvelous organizational skills! I wouldn't want your job in a million years, even if it meant ruling the world (*especially* if it meant ruling the world).

Let's meet at 11am in the lobby again to go out for takeout. Sushi, Chipotle, or burgers.

    May 27, 2012

  • Vijay

@Heather: If you'd like me to txt dinner plans and such, PM me your number. If not, though, hopefully we'll run into you at some point!!

    May 26, 2012

  • Heather

Today I'm getting there probably too late for lunch. But hopefully I'll run into some of you around the Con. :)

    May 26, 2012

  • Vijay

Meeting for a lunch run (tentatively Greek, probably takeout) in the lobby at 11.

    May 26, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

I won't be at dinner. I will be at the Steampunk Ball.

    May 25, 2012

  • Vijay

We'll meet in the Marriott lobby by 8 to head over. Otherwise please meet us there. If the wait time is prohibitive we may switch restaurants.

    May 25, 2012

  • Vijay

Aiming for dinner 8-8:15ish, hopefully at CPK. Will post and text an update in an hour or so.

    May 25, 2012

  • Debbie H

I'm at the con hotel now, room 1118. Getting ready to head downstairs.

    May 25, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

    I don't expect I'll get there before 7.

    May 25, 2012

  • Trish

Bringing peachy sparkling cocktail wine. No, it's not just for chics.

    May 25, 2012

  • Judy

Parfections was closed for the holiday! Noooo! I had to make do with Glauber's, which I haven't tried before. All dark, but probably no spicy :( Are we meeting anywhere in particular?

    May 25, 2012

  • Amelia D.

I'll grab some ginger ale and cola/diet cola on my way out.

    May 25, 2012

  • Vijay

    @Judy: Anything dark & spicy. :-)

    May 25, 2012

  • Vijay

We'll also have white wine, whiskey, rum, and gin among other things. :-) If anyone has time to make a run for mixers (I didn't bring any) we could use a fridge pack of ginger ale, a fridge pack of cola/diet cola, and tonic.

    May 25, 2012

  • Lisa K.

Oh, and have red wine and vodka for the party suite. Will grab something to mix as well.

    May 25, 2012

  • Lisa K.

@Judy : Dark, dark and dark. I'll be up after work (6 or 7ish)

    May 25, 2012

  • Judy

I'll head up around 2ish also. I need to get chocolate for a friend's birthday (right...a friend...her birthday), so I'll probably stop by Parfections on the way. Any chocolate flavor requests?

    May 25, 2012

  • Debbie H

I'll probably be there between two and three, depending on when I actually end up leaving and traffic.

    May 24, 2012

  • Samuel Lubell

Working tomorrow so doubt I'll get there before 7 at the earliest.

    May 24, 2012

  • Vernieda

I should be getting there around 2ish as well.

    May 24, 2012

  • Amelia D.

Should be getting there between 2 and 3 pm tomorrow.

    May 24, 2012

  • Vijay

If you'd like to meet up during Balticon for meals and/or general hanging out, please private message me your cell # here: http://goo.gl/KhQl4

I'll text out details on when/where to meet up (I'll also be posting them here, and you can get comments in realtime if you have the Meetup smartphone app).

We'll be setting up a little bar in my suite, so feel free to bring alcohol/beer/wine/mixers for your preferred beverage. :)

Hope you're all excited! I'll be arriving around 2ish on Friday.

    May 23, 2012

  • Samuel Lubell

I'm scheduled to help out in the green room Sat 5 - 9pm and Sun 1 - 5 pm. But I'll be around at other times.

    May 23, 2012

  • Judy

I glanced over the program. What was that thing Hermione used to be in three places at once? Think I'll need it.

    May 22, 2012

  • Vijay

Here's a direct link to the Pocket Progam Caroline is referencing: http://www.bsfs.org/images/bsfs...

    May 22, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

The pocket program is online now. I'm putting the pdf on my smartphone so I'll have less to carry around. The pocket program includes all the panel descriptions.

I just looked over the Balitcon schedule. Wow! I'm going to want to be three places at once about 24 hours a day. It looks sooo cool. I'm trying to register for the 9 a.m. Saturday Writers Workshop. Is anybody else?

    May 17, 2012

  • Caroline Cox

    Yes, we've made ours.

    April 23, 2012

  • Vijay

The hotel block at the Marriott has filled up ( http://www.balticon.org/hotel.h... ), but there is a waitlist and a few alternate hotels suggested, plus I'm considering (not on the list) the Embassy Suites which is a 5-7 minute walk from the Marriott and would give us a nice place to congregate/party. :) Has everyone else made their room arrangements?
