Maryland Renaissance Festival (Day-long Excursion)

Come join us for a day-long excursion to the Maryland Renaissance Festival! We had a fantastic time last year, and this year should be even more fun. The Maryland Renaissance Festival was founded over 30 years ago and has grown into one of the most attended ren fairs in the world. Part crafts fair, part food and drink festival, and part entertainment show, this is sure to be a LOT of fun.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

  • Feel free to invite as many friends as you'd like, but please keep your RSVP and guestcount accurate and up-to-date.*
  • Please aim to arrive by 10 AM in front of the ticket booths at the Ren Fest.
  • Tickets are $22/per person for the day. Food and drink and any crafts you wish to buy will be additional, of course. If you're carpooling, please pitch in for gas and tolls (if any) with your driver.
  • When you RSVP (please RSVP from the meetup website, not the mobile app), please include your guestcount and then hit RSVP. You will then have the option to answer several questions (since these answers are important to coordinating the event, you MUST answer them. To protect your privacy, and to help us centralize information, please answer these in the RSVP questions and not as part of your RSVP comment or a general event comment. The questions include:
    • Mobile phone # (your cell # will be kept private, and is solely to help aid in meeting up/logistics/emergencies.);
    • Whether you will be carpooling with us, are you willing to drive, and what area are you coming from; Carpools have already been arranged; if you are RSVPing now please plan to arrive independently;
    • Whether you are able to stay the whole day;
    • Other unique or special circumstances of which you wish us to be aware.
  • If you're up for it, we encourage you to dress in costume. Pets are not allowed at the ren fair, tragically. Neither are weapons.
  • Please bring cameras with you! You may also want to bring a bag or backpack to carry your purchases. Also, bring ID. Visa/MC/AmEx are accepted for ticket purchases and many vendors. Discover cards appear not to be accepted at the fair. Not all vendors will accept credit cards, either, and we'd strongly advise you to avoid the ATM lines by getting cash in advance (also as a backup in case credit card machines go down).. An umbrella or poncho or light rainjacket is also a great idea. Comfortable footwear and water (although ostensibly beverages aren't permitted inside, you'll want it for the ride) are also suggested. Please observe the festival's rules: No pets, no weapons (even costume), and no non-contract performances are permitted.
  • Traffic Alert: ON 9/27 STATE ANNOUNCED 2 LANES CLOSED ON I-97 FROM S. OF BALT. BELTWAY (695) FROM MD174 TO BENFIELD ROAD. SEEK ALTERNATE ROUTE FROM I- 695. THIS IS THE AREA ON I-97 JUST BEFORE YOU REACH THE FESTIVAL EXIT. SUGGEST I-295 S. TO 32 E. TO CROWNSVILLE. CLOSURES TO TAKE EFFECT 9/28 THRU 9/30

*While this is an open event, and guests and friends are welcome, IF you commit to participating in the carpool and fail to show up at the allotted time to depart or return, you will be counted as a no-show. A no-show for a carpool event will result in a 3-month ban on attendance to all our events. If you no-show after committing to drive others in carpool without sufficient advanced notice to make alternative arrangements, then you may be removed from the group (barring special and emergency circumstances, of course). Please make sure to keep your RSVP updated and accurate, and if you need to drop out of carpool, please let us know 48 hours in advance of the trip. Thank you for your cooperation.

    Phenomenal time this year. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a great day, and special thanks to everyone who helped acquire my new wizard's staff. :-) You guys are amazing.

    The weather was beautiful, the honey delectable, the food overall good and reasonably priced for a fair (scotch egg, mac & cheese on a stick, and cone of cookies...these are all it takes to make me happy). The entertainment was great, especially Hilby (the Skinny German Juggle Boy), Jonathan Burns (Flexible Comedy), and Molly Dangles. Shakespeare's Skum had some good moments, too. The bee folks were awesome as well, especially the guy who asked each of us what we were drinking and gave us good recommendations on what to try based on that alone. And the lady with the tattoo of Lincoln and his come-hither eyes.

    Additionally, next year we're stealing that elephant. That is all.

    I had lots of fun, even though I got separated from the main grup. Next year why don't we arrange a few meeting places and times so people can link back up.

    Hi everyone,

    Sorry but I have to change my RSVP to no. I hope this doesn't interfere with carpools or anything else.

    Hi everyone, hope you're all excited for Saturday! Just wanted to say thanks for being patient on the details; I wanted to give people a few more days to update their RSVPs.

    I'll get an e-mail out tonight about how we'll coordinate and the carpooling arrangements for anyone that hasn't already made their own.

    Heya... we are probably going to hook up with everyone at the festival. I'm departing from the Vienna area (near metro) and can probably fit 2 more folks max if they need a ride out of that area.

    September 25, 2012

    • Shannon

      I know exactly where that is, no problem.

      September 26, 2012

    • Dana

      Awesome!! See you at 9 on Saturday.

      September 26, 2012

  • Prashant

    @Shannon Actually, Vienna, Dunn Boring and West Falls Church stations have no Metrorail service this weekend, line runs to East Falls Church and then buses from there to Vienna.

    Does anyone want to carpool from the Rockville-Bethesda area?

    Is anyone coming from the Baltimore area who has room in a car?

    But I will be good and not annoy people! :)

    "No performances" is in the same context as "Costumes allowed." If they were going to ban musical instruments, they'd say "No instruments."

    September 15, 2012

  • Kent

    @Dave - Oopps - my Latin Kung Fu is weak - make that "Caveat Troubadour!"

    1 · September 11, 2012

  • Vijay

    @Dave: If you want the mandolin as a costume ornament, they *may* (doubtful) let you in with it, though it's going to be bulky and you're going to risk damaging it with the crowds. If you want to play it, though, the webpage says "No non-contracted performances are permitted." Don't be that guy.

    But I suspect you already know all this, since you brought it up last year in the comment thread. :-)

    September 11, 2012

  • Kent

    @Dave: WARNING - excessive (obnoxious) mandolin playing COULD lead to insertion of said instrument into the hapless minstrel...thus yielding "Dave on a Stick"! Interestingly though - of the many, "...on a Stick" items already at the RennFest - I'll bet they don't have one of those!!! I'm just sayin'..."troubadour emptor," dude!!! = : )

  • Dave

    Can I bring my mandolin?

    September 11, 2012

  • Rich

    Sorry, I can't join you all on the 29th. I'll actually be going with another group this weekend. I just wanted to echo Vijay's comment about going early. Going earlier is definitely better than going later. Traffic usually flows reasonably well but the last couple of roads you will be on before turning into the fair are one lane each way.
