Lesson with Alexandria

The first lesson was AWESOME you guys! Thank you SO much for coming out and making it a success! It seems like everyone learned a lot, met new people, and had a good time! What do you think?

All genders and all orientations welcome!

All bodies and all ages welcome!

All skill levels welcome!

Doors open at 6:30pm. Lesson starts at 7:30pm.

Mingle, socialize, dance, and get one-on-one coaching with the instructor both before and after the lesson.

About the Schedule:

At the end of the first class we talked about continuing with Wednesdays, perhaps every other Wednesday, which I am still trying to work out, probably for Jan. However for Nov and the first part of Dec, the space we are using (The Center for Sex & Culture) is already booked up on Wednesday nights. So hopefully this Thursday time slot will work for many of you, as a one-off event.

Many of you also expressed that starting class at 7pm was too early, so I have changed class to start at 7:30pm. However I really encourage people who can come before then to do so - I will happily give one-on-one dance coaching/instruction, and it's a great chance to mingle and get to know our group, as well as practice your moves (all kinds of moves!).

About the Instruction/Levels:

We had a real mix of levels at the first meetup, from first time dancers to intermediate. While I did my best on the fly to cover basics for the beginners and still have challenging moves/technique for the more experienced folks, I wasn't as prepared as I could have been for such a range, and I realize that overall I definitely favored the beginners. I promise to keep it more balanced from now on. My brain is bubbling with a million ideas for how to teach multiple levels at once, and how to keep the more advanced dancers pushing forward. I appreciate everyone's patience and I hope you all come back we can try out all my new ideas!

For the Future:

If/When we get a slightly larger group and we get this going regularly, then we can absolutely split the class into levels. Bring your friends! Let's build a community!

Please, give feedback and ideas here! Use the rating system to review the last meetup, and use the comments below to make suggestions about the future.

I think after a third or fourth lesson, we should schedule a gorilla rainbow night (means an LGBTQ takeover of a normally "straight" event/location). I have a few SF salsa hot spots in mind for this!!! :-) *wiggles eyebrows wickedly*

MOST of the $ from these lessons go to the Center for Sex & Culture, which is a super cool place if you don't know it. You can check it out at http://www.sexandculture.org/ The Center has made this possible for us to have these gathering, because I am unemployed and can't front the money. (Most places want rental fees paid up front, to reserve a space. The Center is letting me use their space with no money down, trusting that people will show up and donate.) YEAH for the queer support network! (Owners Carol Queen and Robert Lawrence have been queer since way before that was a thing you could be.)

recently someone asked me if you need to come with a partner - you do NOT need to come with a partner. For partnered sections we will pair everyone up. Also, I always rotate the partners as much as possible, to give everyone a chance to meet new people and dance with folks of different heights and skill levels. It's very very important when learning a new partner dance to dance with lots of different partners. I still do this myself- I am learning west coast swing right now and I learn SO much more (not to mention more quickly) when I rotate partners frequently.
