Offshore from Dania or Hallandale

I have Tuesday off and would like to head out to Mahi and Tuna country if anyone has the day off and is willing to go. We will launch from south Hollywood and try to find the Tenneco wrecks, then hopefully drift to Dania. We paddle straight out about 2 miles to 240 feet deep or so and jig or drift baits. Basic skills needed are launching and landing in breaking surf, not getting seasick and being able to paddle about 10 miles total for the trip if there is a lot of current. If the weather is not cooperative I usually abort and launch at the Haulover boat ramp and play with barracuda (up to 30 inches in that area)- this is plan B.

The idea is to shuttle 2-3 cars north to Dania Beach by the pier, drive back to the launch area and hopefully be in the water a little after 7AM.

Directions- Take A1A to Azalea Terrace, just south of the Summit condo. There is a metered lot behind the community center. A kayak cart would help here if you have one.

If we go inshore, bring shiny lures for barracuda and whatever you like for seatrout (shrimp, DOA lures, Gulp!s).  the Haulover ramp fee is $10, the parking meters will usually cost about the same for a half day.

Hi all, Planning a trip to go out of pompano soon and have. A newbie question.... What's the biggest waves you fish in? I went today and I think I was in 3-5 feet seas I turned back. Just wondering what is the typical good conditions around here ?

    May 8, 2014

    • Roger S.

It's more a matter of the waves on the beach than offshore. If the breakers are big, you risk losing equipment on the way in and out. Your own experience dictates what you can handle. I can get out in 4-6 foot seas, but I don't like fishing in anything beyond 2-4 feet. I don't like trying to fight a fish and the waves at the same time and motorboats cannot see a kayak at all once the waves pick up. Even in 3-4 foot seas a kayak disappears completely in the troughs.

      May 8, 2014

    • John S.

I say 2 feet or less. Been out in 3+ and it's not fun especially when they are whitecapping. There are many sites to look at beach cameras before you go. Also check NOAA weather reports. Roger is right on. Turtling in the surf is NO fun!

Looks like it was a "Fishy" day out there guys! Obviously the drift was not possible,do to the south current. Just wondering how the lifeguards reacted when you guys landed at the Hollywood Beach Community Center. Problems? Issues? I ask, because that is probably a great spot to launch for the Tenneco Towers. Tight Lines Guys.

    April 22, 2014

    • Roger S.

The beach between Azalea and Bouganvilla behind the community center is a designated kayak launch area. With a north drift it is just the right distance from the dania pier for leaving a car.

Awesome launch/landing location Roger! No doubt about it....you know your spots.

I agree Roger good to know you're ready for more fun. Thanks for the fishing lesson You took us all to fishing school I'm still rehydrating after 9 hours on the water. Anyone has an opinion about the trevala S jigging rod ???

I'm going to pass today. It looks a little too rough for me. I am going to go out Friday morning, if someone can go with me. I have a recirculating baitwell and a chartplotter/sounder.

Should be flat out! The wind between my building and the next is dead, so that means no wind (at least at Boca Cut).

Would it be futile to join with just a spinning reel and light rod (12-15lb)? I am slowly building up my fishing gear, but I think my next investment is going to be a kayak trailer. I would love to join if it makes any sense on this one. Thanks!

    April 18, 2014

That's great - thanks! I am planning to join as long as weather and work (getting some done before-hand) cooperate

Work got to be too much...stayed up until 12:30 trying but decided to get some sleep and finish it instead. I do like the week-day for getting out, though (less busy). Good luck!

Good luck guys!. Must be nice...you guys not having to work during the week! I guess my time shall too come. Looking forward to Saturday but have to be in a Parade, then a funeral later. Maybe Sunday!

We will be(German and myself ) leaving one car at Dania around 6:30. Will try to get some live bait under the pier if not I will go to buy some at the local baitshop. See u guys around 7 at the launching place

There's no good drift prediction model- you find out when you get there. Sometimes it will even change direction while you are out there.

    April 21, 2014

    • Raul

      Agreed

      April 21, 2014

  • Arturo

Do you guys check drift direction in the morning or you already decided where to launch ? I went to Dania today drift was north to south.

    Counting the hours. Can't wait!

    April 21, 2014

  • Roger S.

Latest weather prediction shows minimal wind out of the north moving to the southeast later. That should let us concentrate on fishing instead of fighting waves and chop.

Hey guys. I just fished today Dania/ Hollywood and I think I may have good news for your drift. Even though this is 2 days away, from your desired launch on Tuesday, the north current was at 1- 1/2 knots heading north all morning long. Even though the winds today were WNW the better part of the day, my kayak was drifting right into the headwind.

In the wee hours I tried something new, Yo-Yo Jigging and landed 2 smaller blackfin in the mid 200's. I had tried this before, with no success, but this time around I used a flutter jig and "fish on !" Landed my first snowy grouper which was a fat 22". The fish are out there for sure. Catch 'em up and stay safe out there.

For those that like to fish from the comforts of their home, (You-Tubers), if you have a chance look for me at YouTube/ Kayak Frank. I am working on a sponsorship and would appreciate if you like, comment and subscribe to my channel, that is of course if you like the video clips I'm up-loading.
    Thanks.

It looks like it is going to start to settle down on Wednesday afternoon. It looks like we might have a week or so of low surf, seas and wind. I can go out any day but Thursday. The weekend looks great, but has a downside. If the weather is nice, there are a gajillion boaters out there, many of whom don't know or care about rules of the road.

Is there a plan "B" if weather looks to bad to launch?
Inshore close by? 3 -4 is no fun launching and the occasional 5 offshore is no fun. On the positive note you have better chances to hook a sail! Might join you guys

I am off teusday, what is the parking situation. I have a dolly and would have problems going down stairs.

    April 17, 2014

    • Roger S.

There are no stairs at either location.

      April 18, 2014

  • Roger S.

Launch location was updated to the Hollywood Beach community center on Azalea Terrace. Dania Pier will be the landing area if we have a north drift.

    April 17, 2014

    • Capt. Bob P.

Since there are so many of us, we can park our cars at the main launch, then park one shuttle car south in hallandale and one north ind Dania. How does that sound?

      April 18, 2014

    • Roger S.

usually we leave half the cars at the launch and half at the landing in case there is no current or a south current.

      April 18, 2014

  • scott K

Have you guys ever tried the patch reefs off of SOBE, like around 36th St? I checked on my top spot map and it shows its good for Snapper and not to far out?

    April 17, 2014

    • Capt. Bob P.

Depending on the current, I go out at NE 16th street in Pompano or Dania Pier. Both are very close from car to beach. Parking is cheaper at Lloyd Beach SP, but it doesn't open until 8 and closes at dusk. It's only $4 per carload, but is a long hike to the beach.

Hi everybody am new to the sport. I still have not bought my gear. I just joined and not sure how to get started.

    April 16, 2014

Lastly, you want some accessories. Some are a must, others a luxury. If you are using live bait, you need some way to keep 'em alive. If you have a godd freind that's willing to stay close, you can share a baitwell. A 5-gal bucket with an aerator will work as long as you change out the water regularly. If you don't want that, rig a seperate rod with a sabiki and put your bait on the hook as soon as you catch it. A net and/or gaff will help you land the fish. I now carry a billy because a cobia almost capsized my boat:) Your going to be out for several hours so there are some comfort items. A small cooler that you can strap to the yak with drinks and snacks is really a necessity. Plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses, good hat, and comfortable clothes that dry fast. Your cell phone in a dry sack is another necessity. A handheld VHF radio is nice to have and is almost a must. Lastly, a waterproof bluetooth speaker will allow you to listen to music and answer phone calls.

In addition to online resources, check out kayak angler magazine and the book "kayak Fishing". Both are available at either West Marine or Bass Pro Shops.

Sunday and Monday are going to have stiff winds and 5 to 6' seas. Hopefully, it will settle down by Tuesday.

I haven't been offshore there. I trust your good judgement about the current. I hope not to end up in south beach. Lol

I can't believe there is this much interest in a Tuesday trip. I'd still like to set up a drift from Hallandale to Dania if everyone is agreeable. That means unloading by the Hollywood Beach Community Center/Library on Azalea terrace and then shuttling a few cars to the Dania pier.

It's getting "REEL" fishy out there. The Bft's I have been catching, have been in as shallow waters as 180ft. You may have to get through a few bonito's to get to them, but it is well worth it. There has been limited current the last 2 weeks, but the fish are definitely around. Try jigging between 250ft and 280ft should you go out that far. That seems to be the key depths for me lately. Trolling will get you some mahi's and will get you at the desired depth for the tuna bite. Next time you get a Monday off, "I'm in"! Go catch 'em up guys. Luck2 all.

I use my kayak for scuba diving so it is wide (36"). While this makes for an extremely stable platform, the downside is that I am very slow.
