Talk 1: Rails Engines

Chris Hein from General Things will talk about Rails Engines, waht they are, when to use them, and why they reduce duplication and increase happiness. His talk will cover:

• How Rails engines speed up development
• How they allow faster test suites

• How to create simple reusable business pieces
• Where they are used in the wild (Spree, Devise, Rails Admin)
• Common solutions and occasional pitfalls
• Live Demo

About the Speaker

Chris Hein is a technical lead at General Things. General Things is a thriving Rails dev shop in SF. Clients include GoPro, Cisco, National Geographic, and Chow. Chris has been developing large applications in Ruby for over 5 years. Some of his favorite acronyms include AMSDEOT (A method should do exactly one thing), and CAPITROAE (cut and paste is the root of all evil). When not coding, he likes to do various gravity tests involving bridges and planes.

Talk 2: Building Mobile Applications with Rails & Helios

Mattt Thompson from Heroku will talk about using frameworks to develop mobile applications using Rails. He'll discuss this in context with Helios, an open-source frameworks that provides essential backend services for iOS apps.

Topics he'll address include:

• data synchronization and user accounts
• push notifications
• in-app purchases
• passbook integration

This talk will show you how to get an iOS app up-and-running on Rails in just a few minutes.

About the Speaker

Mattt Thompson is the Mobile Lead at Heroku, and the creator & maintainer of AFNetworking and other popular open-source projects, including & Induction. He also writes about obscure & overlooked parts of Cocoa on NSHipster.
