HotelTonight: Mobile + Rails as a Backend

Chris Bailey from HotelTonight will talk about using Rails as a backend to mobile apps. He'll talk about things they've learned, API aspects (best practices/tips/tricks), and connecting to service gateways (mobile payments, geolocation, etc.)

About the Speaker

Chris Bailey is the CTO of HotelTonight, which recently surpassed 3M downloads. Chris heads up product development and technology and is responsible for the API and most of the back-end systems as well as guiding the iPhone, Android, and mobile web teams.

Zendesk and Carson, their Rails 3 Engine Host

Zendesk went from over a million lines of rails code to about 140k in their recent release. A big part was a refactoring of their architecture around Carson, their Rails 3 engine host. Carson is an application that contains only a Gemfile and some configuration.

This talk will cover the technical drivers for delivering features as engines, the benefits and drawbacks of the approach, and some of the techniques they used to mitigate problems.

About the Speaker

James Rosen has been User Happiness Engineer at Zendesk for two years and a card-carrying Rubyist for 7, having previously lost his soul to Java. He holds a degree in Information Security from Carnegie Mellon, as well as degrees in Music and Italian Culinary Arts. He prefers his spaghetti all 'arrabbiata and his code non-spaghetti-like.
