As inferred by the previous response, there are certainly "Rails ways" to handling search, but it may be more useful to pursue a more basic MySQL forum / Google search on joins as a starting point. If your needs become more clear, dig more into solr or sunspot.

with at least those 3 tables you mention, and you want to aggregate records from
them, why don't you first start by hand-rolling a SQL query
implementing a multi-way join from
those tables? It's not entirely clear from your question whether
you're asking for something
like that, or if you have an ORM over your db and you're looking at
in Rails. This is a Ruby on Rails meetup group discussion list.
