Monastery (or Point Lobos) Monday

This is short notice, I was checking dive conditions and next Monday's forecasts looks really really good.

Who is interested in either Monastery (I have been there once and would only do it in good conditions and with advanced divers) or Point Lobos on Monday?

Let me know,

Felipe

I have my car packed and ready for tomorrow. Let's meet at Monastery at 9, assess the conditions, and decide whether to stay or go to Point Lobos.

Hey Felipe! Just figured out that all these notices were ending up in my spam box - sad I missed Pt. Lobos again! Put me down as a solid 'Maybe'. I have to see how work pans out. Thanks! ~micha

No problem Micha. Monastery is certainly an advanced dive in terms of getting in and out and being aware of the conditions. The dive I did there we had perfect conditions, yet still had to crawl out because the exit is steep and the ground is soft. I do want to go there, but will assess the conditions once there (Point Lobos is right next to Monastery).

Just got off the phone with my dive master (Jim Steele out of Oaklabnd) and he doesn't recommend the dive for beginners. Also he suggests that if the surf is below the knee at entry, he dives (with entry points on the Far North or South ends.) If above the knee, he picks another place. In addition, he recommends not taking expensive camera equipment (I have my 5DMIII) So I'm on the fence.

Sorry, I meant the Monastery dive. I may be into a Pt. Lobos Dive simply because of my photo gear.

As Jon said, it's an excellent dive when conditions are right. Problem is that's not too often and they can change quickly: e.g. flat when you go in and when you surface have 6 foot rollers beating you up on the exit so I agree that it's not a good site for beginners and definitely dont take expensive camera gear unless you are very comfortable with the site. Personally I don't advise any beginning divers to take a camera - it's too much of a distraction when the focus should be getting comfortable underwater, diving with a buddy, etc.

Monastery is an excellent dive when the conditions are right. I usually plan dives for this site with a backup in mind. I prefer the north side of the beach.

Thanks Jon, I am hoping Point Lobos as a backup given that is a Monday morning. If not, there is always breakwater :)
