The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) - Beyond Beauty

Hi all - this is an NCUPS event that I am re-posting for our colleagues with the Greater Bay Area Scuba Lovers Meetup and may be of interest. Please direct any questions to John Fifer (in the RSVP list).  -Kevin

If love images of beautiful coral reefs and are interested in making sure they are here for generations to come, this meeting will be a great event to attend.

At this meeting NCUPS Club President John Fifer will discuss posting and sharing your underwater images on Facebook as a pre-meeting warm up for our featured presenter, Dr.Michael Webster, Executive Director of the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL)

Join Dr. Michael Webster, Executive Director of the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL), to learn more about the ecology of coral reefs and why conserving these biodiverse ecosystems should be paramount—not just for divers, but for anyone concerned about the health of our planet. Dr. Webster will discuss the threats to coral reefs, how CORAL is uniting communities to save them, and with stunning photographs, share their beauty and value.

An expert in the fields of coral reef science and conservation management, Michael earned a Ph.D. in coral reef fish ecology from Oregon State University. Prior to joining CORAL, Michael coordinated scientific research for Oregon State University’s Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), and later managed grants for the conservation, management, and scientific understanding of Pacific salmon ecosystems at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Michael is a certified divemaster and has conducted coral reef field research in the Bahamas and Australia.

This was a fantastic presentation that I wish more people came to see. Dr. Webster presented some coral ecology information in terms anyone could understand that were very enlightening. He also discussed various programs CORAL is implementing including a village run protected dive operation in Fiji.

Hi John, I'd like to know more about the type of programs, for instance - This dive operation in Fiji, did you get the name of the operation? I'm curious to learn how donations to Coral truly get applied to "saving our coral".

If anyone attended can you please contact me? I'd like to know what you learned and how does this .org really address this issue.
