Shore Dive at Lover's Point in Monterey

This will be a fairly basic beach entry dive. (or two)

I plan on driving down that morning (departing Alameda around 7am) to meet at Lover's Point beach around 9am.

My car is easy to find as it has "Relaxing Rex, Canine Massage" on the back window (My wife's business) It's a silver VW Jetta Wagon.

Here's the plan:

- Meet at 9am

- Buddy up (We cannot provide a buddy for you, however I am sure that one or more of us will be happy to help you find a buddy).

- After taking stock of the conditions, buddy teams will brief, dive, then regroup on shore.

- Find a nice place for lunch (if desired)

- Second dive is an option - we can stay at Lover's or head over to the Breakwater.

- Seven Seas Scuba has a great team to provide fills/rentals as required (they are the closest shop to the Breakwater).

- Please check back often - if weather conditions are poor, we won't go.

- Please understand that the San Francisco Scuba Diving Group is solely for meeting up and finding dive partners. All participants agree to abide by accepted safe diving standards when they RSVP for this event. The organizer(s) bears no responsibilty for an individual diver's actions in or out of the water.

    Great pair of dives!

Me and a friend will also be there at 9. I'm doing a boat dive on Sunday. There's still spots open on the Escapade if anyone wants to join me.

If the latest prediction is accurate, I'm down for a couple dives to Metridium Fields on Saturday, and then maybe see if Lover's 3 is clearer on Sunday....?
(There's an ancillary site close to Metridium Fields that I call "Pipe Rocks" that I really like; it probably has another name already...)

Just spoke with Bamboo Reef, they're saying vis is about 10ft at 50feet at metridium as of an hour, should hopefully be further clearing.3

So, we are meeting at breakwater to dive Metridium? Sounds good,[masked]

I checked with Louis at Seven Seas and tomorrow's conditions would be ~10 foot vis and surgy at Breakwater, so Lover's Point may be not be feasible. I would be happy to check out Wharf 2 as Marc suggested...

Who is still planning to be there tomorrow? I am up for it if others still are! I am planning to dive Sunday too (or instead if we don't dive tomorrow), Sunday the conditions will be a bit better.

    Let me know,

    Felipe

For what it's worth (given that I cannot attend due to work) I would also be on the fence given the weather conditions and forecast. That said, this is NORCAL and it might be worth calling Seven Seas and getting their take on it. They live there and can better give you guys a feel for what to expect. Louis, the manager, is a superb fellow.

If lovers is a concern, I'm a huge fan of wharf 2 next to del monte beach. It's a great site for nudibranchs, plume anemones, sea lions, electric rays, and octopus, etc, and is extremely well protected from wave and swell conditions.

Marc, are you for sure going?

i just checked NOAA for conditions on Sat:
    SAT
N WINDS 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 4 TO 7 FT. NW SWELL 7 TO
9 FT AT 10 SECONDS. What do people think? Looks iffy.

    Hi all,

I greatly appreciate the interest in this event. If you didn't know, I am the CO of the Navy Operational Support Center in Alameda - why am I letting you know this? Because a work item that I MUST attend came up just now and I will not be able to make these dives. I have emailed Kevin to see how he wants to handle that. There is no reason to cancel the dives, however I will not be able to make it. If someone would like to step up and take over, that would be awesome. - Jim

Hey all...I'm still out of commission for about another month with a problem with one of my ears so can't get in on the fun. We've never really done these as guided dives, but just buddied up and gone as pairs. So long as people new divers or those new to the area buddy up with someone locally experienced it should all work out. I hope to join the next dive! See some of you at happy hour tomorrow and we can talk through it.

      November 6, 2012

    • Jim R.

Everyone - As Kevin stated and as is stated on the event, please feel free to take advantage of the opportunity to buddy up and dive this area. I am very sad to have to miss out. Sometimes work interferes with recreation so I hope to see you all on the next one. Please ensure you are all diving safely and within your limits and experience. buddy up, plan the dive and dive the plan. The good folks over at Seven Seas Scuba are awesome and should also be able to help answer any questions. Enjoy!

I have stayed at the hostel in Monterey for ~$25 a night...anybody want to make it a two-day dive trip? Maybe even have an evening dive at breakwater?

    November 4, 2012

    • Felipe

Great! Let's play it by ear on Saturday. Looking forward to the dive, and hope conditions are fine!

      November 6, 2012

    • Justin O

      Sounds like a plan.

I'm still in as long as conditions hold up. Although I am an experienced diver, I do not want to lead and I agree with Terry – as long as we pair up we should be fine. I'm also attending the event this Wed. in SF. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. Cheers

I'm going to try to make the wednesday event as well, depending on work!

Hi, I have a few questions. Does everybody bring gears or will there be an option to rent them for the day? I'd like to come but I dont have any gears except my fins and mask. Plus, I've never dived with a buddy, have always been with a group led by a dive master. I'm not very experienced. Btw - Any divers driving from SF?

    October 30, 2012

    • Jim R.

Pinar, first of all - when is the last time you dove? Second, have you ever done cold water diving? The water temperature will be in the low 50s at the surface and potentially colder at the bottom. The dive shop I prefer is Seven Seas Scuba in Monterey and they have some great dive guides there who could better acclimate you to the area and get you comfortable with the heavier wetsuit and gear you would need. Also, if you need a refresher, they would be able to provide that as well.

I am a beginner and would be benefited from their program/service. Will call to get more info. I also wish to get a ride if possible. I'd love to pay the trip and parking. Thanks much!

So far the weather appears to be holding. There is currently a forecast chance of rain Friday - let's hope it doesn't get nasty.....

    November 4, 2012

    • Justin O

Nice thing about diving is that it's never raining underwater! ... :-)

Justin O - Is your girlfriend up to act as surface support?

    October 29, 2012

    • Jim R.

Just pay attention and be the surface watch (keep an eye on gear and have a phone handy just in case)

      October 29, 2012

    • Justin O

      Yeah, she's happy to

Hi, I am planning to rent dry suit so just want to check whether I will have someone to partner with for 2 dives. Renting drysuit just for one dive is not economical.

    October 30, 2012

    • Jim R.

Yogesh, I do plan on doing two dives as long as weather and conditions permit.

      October 30, 2012

sounds like fun and my first dive with this group... looking forward to it.
