Mt Zion loop (intermediate hike)

From the Chantry Flats parking lot, we'll head down the paved road to the bottom of the canyon then take the trail to Sturtevant Falls. About midway to the falls, we'll connect to the upper falls trail and take it to Spruce Grove Campground where we will break for lunch in the shade of some gigantic Douglas Fir trees.

Shortly after our break we'll continue up Sturtevant trail for a short while till we reach the Mt Zion Trail and take this to the summit (about 1.5 miles).

After the summit, the trail switchbacks steeply down to Hoegees Camp, losing 1,000 feet in a mile and a half (poles are useful here). At Hoegees we will jump on the Upper Winter Creek trail which will take us back to the parking lot.
E/G is appx 2200ft from the Sturtevant Falls TH
Distance: appx 10 miles
Bring:
- at least 3 ltrs of water
- poles if you use them
- hat and sunscreen
- snacks/lunch
- first aid kit
- 10 essentials
FYI, I will be bringing a few hikers who are just starting out so this will not be, by any means, a quick paced hike.

The day held perfect weather for our hike to Zion, conditions couldn't have been better. Andrew, thanks for your assistance with the group, we had zero fall-outs. The group was a pleasure to hike with, everyone had the best attitude and stuck together ...this is what allows organizers to enjoy the hike too.
So thank you, thank you everyone for a great hike up to Zion.

A great hike with a great group of people. It was well worth the hassle of getting up and scrambling for a parking place at Chantry.

Parking is tough in Chantry. If anyone would like to carpool up the hill, we could meet at REI on Santa Anita just south of the freeway at 6:15 a.m.

Hi, could I carpool with you also?

      January 3, 2014

    • Andrew

Beatriz and Cathy, lets meet at REI at 6:15 am.

Hello everyone, just a reminder to bring your adventure pass. You don't have one, you can pick one up at Sports Chalet, Big-5, even at Chantry. If you haven't been to Chantry, it is a busy place on Saturday mornings so give yourself enough time to find parking. We'll meet at the lower parking lot, near the restrooms/gated road.

At the end of Upper Winter Creek trail, do you take a left or a right when you reach the road?

    January 3, 2014

    • Gil

Lynda, when you reach the road at the end of UWC trail you will turn left for a short distance before you veer off onto a dirt path that leads to the upper picnic area of Chantry.

just making sure…according to directions on the web, all I need to do is exit on Santa Anita off the 210 and head North. Is this correct?

    January 2, 2014

    • Gil

That's correct. Go north on Santa Anita, it ends at the Chantry Flats Rec area. Chantry has a three-tiered parking area, we will meet on the lower lot near the restrooms/gated road.

you guys think I can do this hike? I'm sort of in between beginner & intermediate but, still.... not sure if I should do this one.

    • Gil

Hi Jeanette, you know your abilities so this question is best answered by you. I gave a basic description of the hike, but I would recommend doing a little more research before you make a decision.
