John Morse of the Denver Mad Scientists' Club will be telling us about the upcoming Critter Crunch competition. Critter Crunch is the oldest continuously running robotic combat competition in the world and was started right here in Colorado.

As we did with the SparkFun AVC, SHARC hopes to field a number of competitive robots. We will be holding regular build sessions and tutorials. Come out, get inspired, start building and have some fun!

John What are the specifications needed to enter?
Is based on robot weight? Do yo need any special equipment to enter?

Hi. I am working on assembling a team (or two) of CSU students to compete. None of us have ever been to Critter Crunch. Many questions have been asked about kinetic energy storing weapons (like sawblades, drumbots, ect). Can anyone confirm that these kinds of bots are not in the spirit of the competition?

Jeff, there are no guards between the audience and the action. There are people as close as four feet. Any weapon that has the expectation of doing damage to an opponent would probably not be allowed. Hurting someone, or someones child with shrapnel resulting from combat would probably lead to not having Critter Crunch any more.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
