Robert Downey Jr. - and yes, I have a very cogent and reasoned argument as to why he is one of the most canonical and superbly portrayed Holmeses on screen, even though he bears little physical resemblance to canon Holmes, and even though the movies are big studio tentpole action-comedy-adventures. As you may infer, I am no purist - the books were popular/populist adventures, and so are the movies, and Downey's is a brilliant and slyly subversive re-imagining/re-boot of the character (to say nothing of Jude Law, who has brought us the first truly canonical big-screen Watson...in, like, EVER).
Very familiar - have been reading and re-reading them since junior high, and have written a bit of recent fan fiction based on book canon and movie canon, too. Also have read quite a few of the pastiches and have collected many scholarly (and not-so-scholarly!) books on Holmes, ACD and the various adaptations.
Sherlock Holmes was probably my first fandom, dating back to when my parents gave me my first "Complete Stories and Novels of Sherlock Holmes" back in junior high. I was hooked from the very first story! And I was utterly captivated and re-hooked when the first Guy Ritchie "Sherlock Holmes" movie came out in 2009. Since then I've had the wonderful opportunity to meet and talk Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. himself and various Warner Bros folks as I have written pieces on the two movies, as well as to chat extensively with Les Klinger, perhaps the world's top expert on Sherlock Holmes (and advisor for the movies). Chapman University hosted Les a few weeks ago for a talk on Holmes for our students and the public at our first Big Orange Book Festival - his talk will soon be posted online. Let's see - I have so many other interests, from travel and photography to creating art and making jewelry. (I play the bagpipes, too, but not very well, so best to avoid that subject...!)
Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes movies are my favorite version of all, but I adore all of them. I've been a Holmes fan since at least junior high school, when I first read the canon. In "real life" I work as PR director at Chapman University.
Love Sherlock Breakfast Club because it is so welcoming to ALL fans of Sherlock Holmes - whether you love the canon, the old movies, the new RDJ movies, BBC Sherlock or Elementary, whether you're a veteran Sherlockian who can quote the canon chapter and verse, or a new fan who's just discovered Holmes, there's a welcome for you in this organization. We're exploring ALL the aspects of the Great Detective and his world, and learning more together.
