"Skyline to the Sea" Backpacking Trip (It’s Going to be Epic!)

What’s more epic than a 4-day trip to Big Basin over Labor Day weekend? Nothing! According to my trusty Backpacking California book, “From the ridgeline spine of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail descends through lush woodlands, passes sweeping vistas, lines crystalline streams, explores old-growth redwood forest, visits beautiful waterfalls, and then reaches the Pacific Ocean at Waddell Beach.” Heck yes, sign me up! Our plan is as follows:

Friday 8/30 We arrive at Castle Rock Trailhead and hike to the “Waterman Gap Trail Camp,” which is approximately 9.5 miles. We’ll spend the night here!

Saturday 8/31 We hike from our camp to the “Lane Trail Camp,” which is approximately 9.8 miles.

Sunday 9/1 We hike from the “Lane Trail Camp” to “Sunset Camp” (7.2 miles) and get to do an additional side trip (optional but I’ll make you come) to see “Berry Creek Falls,” which sounds like one of the most beautiful waterfalls ever!

Monday 9/2 We finish at Waddell Beach (8 miles) and drive home.

I am an avid hiker but not in super shape so our pace can be slow. We should have plenty of shade to keep us cool and the difficulty is rated at moderate. If I can do this trail, ANYONE can do it! My reservation will fit up to 6 people but please don’t RSVP unless you’ve looked at your calendar and can for-sure make it!

Directions: Castle Rock State Park: Take Highway 35 south of the State Hwy 9 junction for 2.5 miles; the posted entrance is located on the west side of the road.

Cost wise, the trip will cost $75 total (for reservations and parking for 2 vehicles) plus gas money (probably around $25 per person). Obviously the per person cost is dependent on how many people come :)

Matt...can I use your jet boil water and I can bring a base camp filter? Are you carpooling in slo?

    August 29, 2013

  • Bekah A.

Can we carpool? Is there a local meetup spot? Also, do we want to share resources. I'm willing to bring a filter if someone can let me use a jetboil so I don't have to pack a heavier stove.

    August 29, 2013

    • Nicole

Hi Bekah, I just emailed you more details. We have room for you in my car. I have a water filter but maybe you can bring yours and we can decide at the car if we have enough? I think we should have at least 2 filters. I don't have a jetboil but was planning on sharing Ian's stove (we are dinner buddies)

How are carpooling situations working out and the shuttle from waddle back up to castle rock is their a shuttle or will we be arranging that the first morning this could require a very early start from all 3-3.5 hrs plus the shuttle to pre arrange a car at waddle beach

    August 11, 2013

    • Nicole

I'm still coordinating this but I think we'll park our 2 cars at Rancho Del Oso and have one of my friends/family members drive us to Castle Rock. I am focusing on my camping trip this weekend and will post more details about this trip closer to this date :)

Might be a good idea to list those who have spots and those that are waiting and what order they are in on the waiting list

    August 11, 2013

Cool, looks like we have our 6 people :) Does anyone have a vehicle that can hold all of us or do we need to take 2?
