Light Painting in Mare Island

Interested in Light Painting? Want to experiment in creating new images? Bring your light sticks and flashlights. Let's go to Mare Island and do long exposures. We'll start with the golden hour and stay a couple of hours to shape with light.

Bring your tripods, extra memory cards and batteries. Bring a portable light prop, if you have one. Feel free to bring something to stay warm. Let's  have some fun.

I want to thank everyone who came to Mare Island. I want to thank Alan for bringing the steel wool and letting everyone shoot you in action. It was amazing!

So much fun! Mare Island is creepy. I was surprised at how easy light painting is. The pictures look like they're from a hyper-realistic video game!

One more question - what lenses should I bring? I have a slower[masked] and f/[masked] and 70-200. Should I bring the faster ones?

I would bring them all if you can...better to have and not need etc...also all 3 have plusses and minuses

Unless you are planning on shooting the moon or a streetlight down the road, the wider lenses are going to be more focused on this meetup. Consider the rate that light falls off. The farther away you are, the longer you will need to leave your shutter open to capture the image. If you are concerned with the weight, I'd leave the[masked] home. That's 3.5 pounds I'm leaving out of my bag.

This is my first time doing light painting - do I need a ND filter or can I get away with my standard long exposure bulb mode settings? I also have a polarizer to help darken, is that enough?
