The Sunday Night Film Club - DC Chapter Message Board › AFI LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL SEPT 23-OCT 12
Silver Spring, MD
Silver Spring, MD, August 25–AFI today announced its complete slate of films for the 2009 edition of the AFI Latin American Film Festival, taking place September 23—October 12 at the historic AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Now in its 20th year, the annual AFI Latin American Film Festival showcases the very best filmmaking from Latin America and, with the inclusion of films from Spain and Portugal, celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections. Always one of AFI's most anticipated and best-attended events, this year's festival promises to be the biggest yet, with over 30 films from nearly 20 different Latin American countries.
The 2009 festival kicks off on Wednesday, September 23 with the Opening Night selection, Mexico’s I’M GOING TO EXPLODE [Voy a explotar], a New Wave-styled story of young lovers on the run, from talented young writer/director (and AFI Conservatory alumnus) Gerardo Naranjo.
The Brazilian/US co-production BEYOND IPANEMA: BRAZILIAN WAVES IN GLOBAL MUSIC [Beyond Ipanema: Ondas brasileiras na música global], which had its world premiere in July at MOMA’s annual Premiere Brazil!, is this year’s Centerpiece Presentation, screening Friday, October 2. In the festival’s Closing Night spot is Berlin Panorama selection JUST WALKING [Solo quiero caminar], a co-production of Spain and Mexico, on Friday, October 9.
There will be a free community screening of selected episodes from LATIN MUSIC USA, a four-part miniseries set to air on PBS later this fall, on Sunday, September 27.
The festival introduces two new initiatives this year: All-Access festival passes will be made available for $99 ($75 for AFI members and students) and, with the support of the Maryland Film Office, AFI will take a traveling version of the festival on the road in October to Baltimore, Frederick and Easton. Guest appearances and other special events will be announced in the coming weeks.
