Springbrook Rescue Project + hike

This is a weekend voluntary work plus many optional activities and hikes.

The Australian Rainforest Conservation Society (ARCS) embarked on an ambitious project to protect and restore the World Heritage rainforests of the Springbrook region in 2008.

ARCS has a contract with the Queensland Government to restore these areas based on facilitated natural regeneration. ARCS is a national, non-government, not-for-profit organisation with headquarters in Brisbane.

The restoration project is an international case study for ecological restoration with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Springbrook Rescue is a long-term project that aims to restore and enhance critical habitat and functional connectivity, lost over the last century, around the wet heartland of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area (GRWHA).

Eradicating new, forest replacing, shade-tolerant weeds that threaten the World Heritage Area is an urgent priority.

ARCS offers accommodation for groups of up to 14 volunteers at$20/night/person (to cover costs of electricity, insurance and maintenance). The Lodge has kitchen, dining and living room facilities and has beautiful night time views of the Gold Coast.

They are looking for self organising groups of up to 14 volunteers to go to Springbrook for a day or a weekend. They only ask for groups to do 4 hours work and they supply all tools. Brisbane bushwalkers are currently involved in the project and usually arrive on Friday night, go bushwalking Saturday and then dig out Aristea ecklonii (an invasive weed) on one of the recovery areas for 4 hours on the Sunday or vice versa. ARCS staff usually give a presentation on the project on the Friday or Saturday night and provide morning tea when we have a break during the weeding.

Volunteers will be able to enjoy some of the loveliest scenery in Australia, and explore any of the wonderful rainforest walks through the National Parks in this iconic natural heritage.

We will be allowed to do 2 tracks which are not open to general public: The Lodge Track (class 5) and Ankida Waterfall Track (class 3).

We can do 4 hours of weeding on Saturday and some hikes on Sunday. Other available activities are:

Daytime: bird watching, cloud watching, plant identification, photography, bushwalking, arts and crafts, galleries etc.

Evenings: glow-worms, stargazing, talks, seminars, videos, relaxing around the fore, rading etc.

Rhea Phelan, Volunteer Co-ordinator of ARCS has already booked the weekend for our group so we need a group of 14-20 people for this cause.

You can find more info in a PDF file I attached. Plz go to tab MORE, then FILE and you can find eVolunteer accomodation file there. Also plz see these links:

Unfortunately as Rhea explained we have to postpone this event due to weather conditions which is out of our control. I postpone it to 5-7 July and wish U a great weekend. In the meantime, plz feel free to have a look at other meetup events for this weekend. I will post the link here if I find something relevant. C U soon and I apologize again for any inconveniences made. Cheers

  • Rhea P.

Hi Everyone, the weather forecast for this weekend is intermittent rain in lower Springbrook and given that we are in the high country it looks like it is not going to be a pleasant weekend. So unfortunately I am going to have to cancel the weekend at Springbrook, as reluctant as I am to do so, as we desperately need all the help we can get with the restoration work. I am very, very sorry for the late notice but the weather up here is unpredictable and we would like you to have an enjoyable time up here and at this stage I don't think that is possible this weekend. I have talked to Mahmood and we have rescheduled the weekend to the 5th to the 7th of July. Again I am very sorry for the late notice and I hope you can all join us in July. Hope you have a good weekend.

    Hi everyone,
Here is some information on what you will need to bring and a suggested plan for the weekend.
Looking forward to meeting you all
    Rhea

Things to bring for the weekend: Food for the weekend, a water bottle, hat, sunscreen, warm jacket, long pants and boots to work in, lighter clothing for any weather, head torch, sheets and pillow cases (we have blankets and pillows). Remember Springbrook is often 5-8 degrees cooler than the coast so make sure you bring enough warm clothes. Also accommodation costs for the weekend will be $40/person (for Friday and Saturday) Directions for the Lodge: Follow the signs to Springbrook from Nerang or Mudgeeraba and the signs to the Best of All Lookouts. The Lodge is number 317 on the left side of Repeater Station Road when heading up to the Lookout. Unfortunately some of the Lodge road has been washed out so you may need to park at the office, I will help you carry your things down to the Lodge.

Hi Sandra, that sounds great, do you think there will be enough time Saturday morning? Alternatively you could do it Sunday morning if there is not...

      May 8, 2013

    • Sandy B

Hi Rhea, 0800am start on Sat and 0700am start on Sunday as per your schedule? Please let me know whether I could use your DVD player and the TV. Assume there is area in the TV room that I can put my yoga matt? My time for Yoga is flexible to suit group schedule for sure .
