I have four and a half months sober. It's not a LOT of time but If we can all meet, maybe we can talk a little about the psychology and strategies that play into living a sober life.

I am serious about it and timid at the same time because it's new to me. Maybe I jumped the gun when I cancelled when 2 couldn't make it. I'm trying to be confident myself, just stopped drinking and having extreme difficulty and anxiety with it.

Anxiety is what always gets me. I can go a week sober until it takes over. Kava and/or passionflower help.

I have a new post in regard to this Meetup on the Discussion board. I hope you will take a look at it! It is good to see so much activity and initiative going on here!

Canceling my attendance since 2 others cannot attend tonight...apparently my iPhone will not allow me to cancel the meeting.

Hey, is someone able to change the message on the group's landing page that says we aren't currently meeting? Wouldn't want to dissuade someone from showing up to a meeting.

I think that can only be the original organizer. I'll try to see if I can later or send him a note.

For this week we'll go with Tues at 6. We can discuss options for moving forward tomorrow. Cal, I hope you can make it tomorrow too!

Andrew- Can you tell me the difference between the Buddhist approach and SOS with conquering addiction and healing body/mind? I need to learn more and see what's best for me. Thanks in advance!

It's been some time since I looked over SOS so I'm not able to provide a reliable comparison. I am also not an expert on the Buddhist 12-step approach, but I am more familiar with it. It is an interpretation of the steps influenced by the application of Buddhist philosophy to one's life. I've been to a few meetings and am trying to get into a stronger habit of attendance. It has seemed to be where people uncomfortable with the christian flavor of AA/NA have looked. But I've always been interested in alternatives like SOS and SMART. Just never had the opportunity for the former. Given the overlap of interest (or disinterest rather) I think it's a good idea to plug into the existing weekly scene so more people have the opportunity should this group move forward.

Later Monday nights works well for me. Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow night at 7:30.

Is later Monday nights ok with everyone since there looks to be a conflict for some on Tues/Thurs? I'm trying to work in a 6pm yoga class and it's close by. It's certainly not all about me though. I am open to other suggestions...just trying yo open this back up again?

Maybe it's not so important for the first few meetings - no need to set a fixed weekly day right now. Tuesday works for Craig and I can do Tuesday as well this week.

Sorry- I just meant I don't know much about SOS so I was going to research more before the meeting. Not looking for 12 step...my understanding is SOS is different and came recommended to me because I don't want a program involving "God." Am I on the right track?

Ok group I'm so happy we have a few of us and hopefully we can grow! Would anyone be really frustrated with me if I move this to Tuesday nights? I'd eventually like to meet possibly twice a week, we'll see how things go. I don't think any of us have been in this group before. I'll see if I can find some materials online. Thanks!

The Buddhist 12-step group meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings so there might be a scheduling conflict there for some people.

      February 9, 2014

    • Andrew

The SOS model is not 12-step, but the Buddhist approach is different from AA/NA. It would be unfortunate if people had to choose between the two.

I'm good with either of the above. I need the support and my therapist recommended SOS for me.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
