Lets paddle Picnic island and watch the moon come up.

lets meet at the Sanibel causeway, Span B, then will paddle to picnic island for an evening of fun. Start a fire and wait for the moon the rise in the evening skies. Bring your chairs, bring anything you like to toast the strawberry moon. its going to be bright. "Trip depends on weather."
please bring a flash light, and light for your boat, the more lights the better.
will be returning in the dark, with just the moon to light our way.
PLEASE, THIS PADDLE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS,
Regardless of who organizes and posts an event, when you take part in a kayaking trip. You alone are responsible for your safety. Kayaking can be dangerous. You paddle at your own risk. Safety is your responsibility. It’s also your responsible to wear a Life Vest (PFD). If at night have lights for your kayak, flash light will work, the more light the better. It's mandatory to have a PFD and Whistle when kayaking. see that you wear your PFD.
The tides are not in our favor. You along know your ability's. Safety first.

So glad you all had a good time. I decided to bail that morning when I saw the weather forecast. I ended up in Matlacha that evening trying to find some clear sky to photograph the moon, and I could see the lightning strikes that were hitting directly over Picnic Island - I would have been scared out of my mind! Glad you're all safe and sound.

My first nighttime kayak trip was certainly a memorable one. The group made it fun and I have never before got in the water during a storm to get warm!

The moon didn't show up but we had quite the adventure. Huge cold rain storm , went for a swim in the warm gulf to shake off the cold, a awesome campfire, good food, a beautiful birthday cake, great people to share it with and my first beer ever. I even got lights for my boat. Pretty amazing birthday and great stories to tell.

Hi, I'd really love to go.. Want to see the Super Moon, but I'm a novice and don't have a kayak ( I could rent or borrow) . How difficult is it? Could I meet you at picnic island? Deb

Hey Darlene, I haven't paddled to Picnic Island before... does it get so low we may be walking part of the way?

      June 21, 2013

    • Darlene

Right around the island will be quite low. You can cut over to near the channel which will be better. Jeff will have a map to show you the best route. Also the later you leave Picnic on the way back the higher the tide will be.

Don't think I'll be able to get my kayak back so I will not be able to make it. If a miracle occurs is there a number I can call or text to say I'm coming?

Hi Mistered, Thank you so much for your kind offer. It may be a bit too challenging for me but I am still debating. That is really so kind:)) I'll keep you posted.

      June 21, 2013

    • Debbie S

@Mistered ~ I just took a look at the map and think that it I could hold my own on the way over but not so sure about coming back since I've never paddled at night. But thank you again and I hope you'll keep that offer open for a more appropriate paddle:) Have Fun!

Just to be sure of location and to wish you all a safe journey if my time permits, which Island do you leave from?
The way I understand it, it is the next island after the toll to sanibel? Correct or wrong anyone?

    June 21, 2013

    • Janet

It's usually the second island they launch from.

      June 21, 2013

  • Darlene

I am going to camp on Picnic Saturday night. Will leave from Port Sanibel Marina in the morning. I'll get the fire ready and see you all on the island.

Does anyone know where to get lights that attach easily to a kayak?

    June 21, 2013

    • Darlene

You can get specific boating lights at places like West Marine but any kind of light will do. I sometimes use battery operated holiday lights that you can get at Big Lots. They have patio ones this time of year. Or you can tape or bungie flashlights on your boat. Or wear lights on your hat or around your neck, bike lights also work. Also glow sticks will work. You just want to be able to be seen so the more and brighter the better.

Can't make it tomorrow, but I probably don't have the paddling ability for this one. Anyways, we are back in town and looking forward to getting involved again!

Hello everyone. This is my first time out with you guys but this is my favorite kind of activity! Just found out there's a possibilty I will not be able to get my kayak and equipment back from a friend whom I lent it to to be able to go out. Does anyone have an extra I could use or a tandem? Just in case?
    Thanks!

Darlene, do you need any firewood?

    June 19, 2013

    • Darlene

I won't have room to bring any out but if you or anyone else would like to bring some I am sure we could use it. If not, there will hopefully be enough on the island.

Greeting, To all our kayaking friends, that are going on a trip
I posted. I will be away for a week in New Orleans. I will answer any question you post, when I return. If someone else can answer it first, that even better. See you all on the twenty second:-)

June twenty first, is the longest day of the year, This look like a great weekend to camp. I return from New Orleans late on Thursday.
It will be hard for me to get ready by Friday, "That doesn't mean I won't try?" But I will camp out Saturday Night.

I had to change my rsvp...it's a girls biking weekend in Orlando! Have a blast!

Yes, many will call the June 2013 full moon a supermoon. The upcoming full moon on June 23, 2013, will not only be the closest and largest full moon of the year. It’ll also present the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013. On June 22, we will see the moon at 96% full. June 23th 100% full at 7:32pm

A WORD OF ADVISE: To those that have never paddled at night. Please note that the tide will not be in our favor, and that the moon affects our tide movements, a lot stronger when the moon is closer to the earth. THIS PADDLE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

Koreshan in the morning....sanibel in the evening...why not!

    May 21, 2013

  • Steve

Thanks for the info Kees. I now see the answer to my question is posted.
But I have another one. Where on the Sanibel Causeway do we meet? Before the toll, the map doesn't show?
And with relationship to the Causeway, where is Picnic Island and how far?

    May 21, 2013

    • Ricky & M.

We'll meet at the 2nd island after the toll. We'll park on the right side.

      May 21, 2013

  • Darlene

I'm considering camping out there for the night or weekend.

    May 21, 2013

  • Kees

Steve, you need at least one light on you or on your kayak. Be visible from front and the back. Best are LED navigation light available with suction cups, red/green on the bow, clear white on the stern. And bring some bug spray. No GPS needed you will see enough light from the city and causeway to know where you are.
No such thing as stupid questions. lol

    May 20, 2013

  • Steve

Being a beginner I might ask some stupid questions like do we need navigation lights, GPS, Flashlights?
