Tuesday Learnshop - All About Selections

At this meeting, we'll review selection techniques in Photoshop CS5 and Elements 11. A variety of Photoshop techniques depend on making a good selection - from changing a sky to creating a composite.

  • Creating a mask from a selection and creating a selection from a mask.
  • Partially selected pixels.
  • Using the basic selection tools - lasso, etc.
  • Using the magic wand effectively.
  • The Quick Mask.
  • Refine Edge tools.

Another great night of learning from Elton. These learnshops are one of the ways that SPS elevates themselves from the other photography groups in town. They aren't full on classes that teach you every detail; that's not possible in the available time. Multiple sources are offered and suggested for deeper training. These are the perfect get- accquianted seminars where you can judge if you need to know more about the subject or maybe get that one question answered that you are having trouble with.

The projection was from the computer and the type was too small to read, and if you did not already know PS it was very hard to folloow.

I agree. Unfortunately the table layout at the church is not really conducive to a classroom type of setup. Those of us at the back were struggling to see what was going on and couldn't really follow, even with the larger screen. Does the church have some regular folding tables that could be set up? That would get everyone closer and provide a better viewing experience. I would be willing to help set up and take down, as I'm sure others would as well.

Hi Ted. Photoshop Elements 10. Elton was using Elements 11 that recently came out. Elements is a smaller version of Photoshop.

Great presentation, Elton. You helped me understand more. I'm ready to do some editing on Elements 10. And I get layers & masks now, too!! =)

Excellent presentation on making selections. Especially appreciated seeing how to do a complicated selection and creating masks. Thanks, Elton!

I can see how hitting the contrast and refine edge can help in making selections. Thanks for that!
