Join us for our SPS Meeting on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at the Briarcliff Baptist Church.
Our speaker and judge will be Robin Davis. (See below for a description of her presentation.)
Born in Savannah, Robin grew up spending her summers on Jekyll Island and the Georgia Coast. She attended the University of Georgia where she graduated Magna Cum Laude, and in 1984, attended the UGA Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy, which deeply influenced her approach to the medium of photography. She returns to Cortona each year to teach the Cortona Center of Photography workshops. As an artist and photographer, she has researched and worked extensively with a variety of unique photographic techniques, blending tradition with experimentation to achieve painterly and illustrative images. Her work has been featured for Popular Photography Magazine, Liz Claiborne, Penguin Putnam Publishing, The Coca-Cola Company, The High Museum Of Art, Michael C. Carlos Museum/Emory University, Archaeology Magazine, The Piedmont Park Conservancy, The Goethe-Institut, Visiting Nurse Health Systems, The Atlanta Shakespeare Company, Bellagio Las Vegas, Bloomingdales, St. Martin's Press, Buckhead Pizza Company, St. Regis Hotels, The Omni William Penn Hotel and many private and international collections.
Our competition theme this month is RETRO. Go old school and create an image that evokes a bygone era when life was simpler. This challenge is to capture the “feel” of a moment that suggests a scene from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, or 60s (or earlier if you like). This could be a scene with a classic car, a model in period costume, or anything that puts the viewer in that time and place.
More about Robin Davis and her planned presentation
Robin Davis will present and discuss her series of photographs titled 13 Women.
These symbolic portraits are her interpretations of allegorical woman including Ophelia, Justice, Rapunzel, Cleopatra and others. Robin will tell her story of how she "discovered" her models, designed and made the costumes and sets, and watched these images come to life. Her photographs are very special and can be seen on her website at http://www.robindavis.com/galleryview.php?series=10&name=13+Women
Robin is known for her evocative photographic narratives that resonate with a mood, personality, and mystery that evoke another time and place. Her effects are created as the photograph is made and not later in Photoshop. Using her in-camera techniques in innovative ways, she creates unique, illustrative images for advertising and design, book covers and magazines, as well as fine art images for interiors, galleries and collectors.
She also teaches her techniques through workshops with The Third Eye Photographic Adventures and Workshops, and has also been teaching the Cortona Center of Photography Workshops in Italy since 1998.
