Shoot at Pullman Train Yard Warehouses

This event is for full (paid) SPS Members Only - Please do not RSVP if your dues are not current.

The unusual collection of barn-shaped brick railroad warehouses in the century-old Pullman Yard on the edge of Kirkwood has sat mostly vacant and surrounded by weeds for nearly two decades under state ownership.  If you've driven down DeKalb Ave. in the Candler Park area you've probably seen these old buildings across the railroad tracks.  Although fenced in and posted, many graffiti "artists" have left their marks on both the interior and exterior of the buildings.  Photographers have also found their way inside and you can see some examples of photographs taken there at this Flickr site:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/pullmanyard/

There are lots of photos ops, from wide angle to macro, and this is a great place to practice your HDR.  You might want to bring flash as well.  I've tried to have us there from late afternoon to after sunset to take advantage of a full range of lighting conditions.

IMPORTANT: There is a $5 charge to participate in this meetup because we have to pay for a security officer to open the property and stay with us during the entire time we are there.  In addition, everyone will have to sign a release before entering the premises.  This meetup is limited to 20 photographers and you must be an SPS member to participate.  Please do not RSVP unless you are sure you are coming and if your plans change, please update your RSVP so others will have an opportunity to take your place.

Parking is limited to the street along the property, so I would encourage folks to car pool if at all possible.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to post them here or email me.  This should be a great outing and I look forward to seeing folks there!

Jeff

I am very sorry to bother you all, but I am a location scout in town and the Goat Farm was suppose to be a location for a photo shoot for a British photographer that is coming to town and it just fell through. We only need 4 hours, small crew, 10 people. Can you help me find the contact person for the yard? Many many thanks. Fondly,
    Lynn Johns

Does anyone have any contact info for Pullman yard? I was wanting to shoot there and I know it is private property. So I need the contact info of who ever owns the property to get permission to shoot.

I had a very good time checking out the graffiti. There were some very good quality images and got a few macro shots of the rusting beams, hooks, etc.
All we needed were some environmental models.

A big thanks to Jeff for pulling this all together.

Great shoot! Thanks for making the arrangements, Jeff! Limiting to 20 was a good idea-for shooting and for safety.

Great shoot! I hope you will do this again for those who did not get to go this time. Thanks, Jeff, for making the arrangements.

@Fritz: We had the place until 9:00 p.m., so yes we were there into the blue hour. Overcast skies, however, did not make for very good photo ops that included the sky, particularly after sunset.

A wonderful place to shoot. Thanks, Jeff, for putting this together and taking care of the details. I'd love to go back again...this time with the right remote!

I'm really glad this event worked out -- we had a great group of photographers out there last night. Hopefully we will have another opportunity to do this again in the future. I appreciate everyone's cooperation in paying the fee, getting releases signed, etc., and more importantly I'm glad everyone made it through unscathed! Please post some pics when you get a chance -- its nice to see the place through others' eyes. And if anyone got a really nice shot of the state patrol officer and his motorcycle, how about emailing it to me so I can pass it along. I'm sure he would appreciate it. Thanks.

It was great to see lots of excited people finding things to shoot. Very well organized. I think keeping the number of photographers limited to 20 was a wise idea. Some people stumbled into other's shots, me included.

Devon: I had to submit the final list of names yesterday for security purposes so I can't make any substitutions at this point.

Those of you who are on the RSVP list as definitely attending the Pullman Yard shoot and who will be at the SPS meeting Friday night can go ahead and pay me the $5 fee and sign your release at the meeting to save us some time next Thursday. Just see me before the meeting or at the break. Thanks.

Stephanie, I sent you a message on your profile. Thanks.

A GENTLE REMINDER - Please remember that this event is limited to only those folks on the RSVP list. I have to submit the names of folks attending by Friday of this week. If you are on the list and your plans have changed, please change your RSVP status before Friday to make room for one of your colleagues on the waiting list. If you are not on the list, the security officer will not allow you onto the premises. Thanks.

Linda, if you send me an email with your first and last name on it, I will verify with the paid membership list and I can update your "title" accordingly.

  • Jeff M.

Well, at least you had a dry run and you won't have any problem finding us on the 7th! :)

Well folks, I know where this place is. I thought the meetup was today and I got there at 4:30 and walked around and when no one showed up, I went to Oakland Cemetery. Dogwoods are out in Oakland now and make for some good images especially at the Confederate Monument.

I wonder if there is a meetup somewhere else I missed today. :>)

Linda, It's because no one knows who you are. "Linda" isn't enough of a name to tell, and the picture doesn't help.

    March 22, 2011

  • Linda B

For some reason, I"m not listed as a member, but I am. (Just in case that would make a difference.)

    March 22, 2011

  • Jeff M.

@Stephanie: I'd like everyone to be there as close to 5:00 as possible so I don't have to keep running back out to the gate, but we'll try and accommodate folks who arrive a little late. Also, we have the place until 9:00 p.m., but folks should be able to leave whenever they want.

    March 19, 2011

  • Stephanie E.

Do you have to be there right at 5pm to sign the release form or will it be at the entrance with the security guard?
