Startrails and Meteors

Let's get together for some more astrophotography. The Draconids meteor shower takes place on Sunday night, Oct 7. From what I've read, we can catch the meteor shower in the early evening for a few hours and still head home at a reasonable hour.

Remember to come prepared for cool/cold weather.  The mountain is at least 20 degrees cooler than down below.

So did anyone venture up to Brasstown Bald last night?

Folks, I've been keeping my eye on the cloud cover satellite and it doesn't look good. Earlier today, I received a couple text images of BB and it was fogged in. I'm not going to cancel the Meetup but I don't think it's worth the 2 hour drive for a 10-20% chance of getting a shot tonight.

:( that's too bad. I hope we can do this again, though, I was really looking forward to it. Thanks for the update!

    What lens should I bring?

    October 5, 2012

    • Carl F.

As wide of a lens that you have. I use an 11-16mm on a cropped sensor and a 24-70 on a full frame.

Sunset is at 7:11pm Sunday. The current forecast calls for partly cloudy skies which will probably change before then. Plan to arrive and ready to hike up to the visitor's center around 6:15. It will be cold and windy up there so come prepared. For everyone else not wanting to venture up there, let's setup shop at the south end of the parking lot. Let's hope that we will not have a lot of late arrivals that will cause us light issues.

Come prepared for it to get very cold once the sun goes down. My plan is to only stay for a couple hours, say 10:00.

If you are in need of help in setting up your camera for startrails or Milky Way shots, I'll go over the basics at 6:00 near the picnic tables at the southwest end of the parking lot. It's not fair to me or to others if start asking for help during the night if you don't take the time to be prepared yourself. Look through the previous Meetups where we've done this and you should have a pretty good idea on what to do.

When should we arrive to go up the mountain?

    October 1, 2012

    • Carl F.

Give yourself about 30 minutes to hike up the mountain so plan to arrive around an hour before sunset. Sunset is at 7:11. I'll try to be there around 5:30.

Hi, is anyone travelling from Midtown area to the location for meetup?
I need a ride from Midtown to the location. I would like to attend this as it sounds interesting and fun.

If not midtown, from any part of the town which is accesible to MARTA station, so that I can reach there and then ride with you.

    Thanks.

I read that the peak is Sunday night. Does anyone have any idea how much less meteors would be on Saturday night? Sunday night is going to be very tough for me, but I don't mind taking a stab Saturday night and see how it goes. Worse case would be zero meteors and just star trails and milky way.

Veera, it's not a big meteor shower display anyway. Certainly, not like we just saw. You just might get a few per hour. Tough to tell.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
