*Unfortunately, I can't shake this cold and will be in NO shape to paddle Saturday. Allison Barnes has graciously agreed to step in as the new cohost of the Silver Springs Adventure. Though I'm heartbroken to miss this adventure, I'm confident there will be another Silver Springs Paddle in 2013!!! -Chris
Silver Springs features the famously clear waters where some of the old Tarzan episodes were filmed. The occasional statue and petrified tree are still visible on the bottom. Another big draw, the wild Rhesus monkeys that live along the banks. Hide your food and snacks as we paddle past "Monkey Island" during our adventure to the spring head. Silver Springs "lives" (pun intended,,,ha,ha) up to the hype- expect to see plenty of native Florida wildlife along the way.
This paddle is an All-Day trip that includes 5miles against a 3mph (approx.) current. Once we reach the head of Silver Springs, we will turnaround and paddle 5miles downstream to Ray Wayside Park (our launch site.) Plan for the paddle accordingly and bring water, food, and gear for the day.
Ray Wayside Park offers restroom facilities and river access for $5.00 per person. There is a boat ramp along with a kayak/SUP friendly ramp. The turn onto 28th from HWY 40 can be overlooked, so keep an eye out. *The local name for HWY 40 is Ft. Brooks Rd.
Lodging- There are cabins and campsites available in the Silver Springs Park. SUP friendly Hotels are also nearby.
This meetup was put together privately by Mike Dobbins (free of charge.) I posted it on SUP ECLECTIC ADVENTURES once I learned 6 of our members are already signed up to go. We look forward to paddling with a sizable group on this adventure!
