Station Road, Alton, GU34 2PZ
For all you literary buffs who also like a walk. We meet at Alton railway station in East Hampshire (about 65 mins from Waterloo) and then walk through the old market town of Alton to Chawton where we visit Jane Austen's House. This is where she spent the last years of her life (when she got her work published and became famous).
We walk in her footsteps from her house (which is open to the public) past the church where we can go in and see the special grave where her mother and sister are buried, then through fields and copse with great views of the South Downs to a lovely village called Farringdon.
From there we head to a church with an amazing ancient yew tree that has been hollowed out which can "fit" 20 people, a good photo opp. We then carry on through the village and back up the old disused railway line to the village of Chawton.
We will eat at the local pub. This is a very busy place and we will have to book in advance. So please say when you RSVP if you want lunch.
Total walk: 6 miles You can choose to meet us directly at Jane Austen's House instead of the station in which case the total walk will be 5 miles.
Parking is available at the station (£3 for the day) and opposite Jane Austen's house (free car park) for those of you who wish to drive there.
