Flesh

Okay so with all due respect, vegetarians and vegans please avert your eyes now.

For the carnivorously inclined omnivores among us:

Some people become squeamish at the thought of ever having to catch, kill and butcher their own meat but will happily eat it up as long as someone else does the dirty work.  That said, for those of us that take personal responsibility  and self reliance seriously it is not as easily dismissed.

Your ancient relatives have eaten meat for as long as people have walked on this Earth. Meat for your DNA's brain and body function is crucial. It is in our genetic history. Our ancestors have passed along a deep rich history and we organizers of Survive and Thrive Philadelphia are intent upon keeping that ancient knowledge alive and well in our collective hearts and minds.

This is a very special outdoor weekend event that is worthy of schedule clearing and family participation. You may participate either as a weekend camper or just come out for a long one day experience. It is a FREE EVENT but the organizers will accept donations to cover the material costs up to $200.00 total.

Here is the framework:

Friday, August 22nd-

Thrivers may arrive onsite as early as 3 pm

This is going to take place on a working farm and surrounding woods. Chickens, pigs, sheep and many other animals will be a part of your experience.

Bring your own food and drink. Bring your outdoor camping gear. Prepare to meet all of your own needs. There will be running water, an indoor bathroom and kitchen sink available to us in the old farmhouse on site. Everything that you bring with you YOU are expected to bring out with you ( pack it in , pack it out ). Plan to  respectfully leave no trace of yourself.

Friday evening we will have a bonfire and collective hangout. This has proven to be rewarding for so many of our members over the years. The social value within Survive and Thrive Philadelphia meetups involves sharing of lots  info as well as networking. Your need to not feel so isolated for wanting to be self sufficient in such a dependent culture has merit worth your attention.

Saturday, August 23rd at 9 am sharp

We will begin instruction on the simple old ways of trapping and snaring. We will demonstrate and give hands on experience as we set working traps for beaver. Other common small game mammals in the form of squirrels, coons, possum , rabbits, groundhogs will be fleshed out too. This will be geared for beginners but if you already have some level of skill come get your hands in it to refresh your muscle memory. Stay sharp.

After a lunch break we will break off into teams of 2 or 3 people. There will be a live group tutorial on how to respectfully harvest , skin, dress ( remove guts & organs) and butcher a small animal for human consumption.

After the the first whole group tutorial then each small group will break off with their own LIVE RABBIT that has been humanely farm raised locally. With careful oversight and available assistance, you will participate in the respectful killing of a meat animal. Your team will work together to remove the skin with fur intact, remove the body parts undesired and  to butcher the rabbit.

But wait !! There's more !! Late on Saturday afternoon:

We will then clean up and begin to prepare a feast of fresh tender rabbit !! A few different recipes and cooking methods will be used for different tastes . Potatoes, onions and a variety of greens will be served for a group buffet dinner. Bringing potluck desserts is certainly welcome.  Plates and cutlery and paper towels will be provided. You are on your own for drinks.

Some folks may wish to part after we clean up from dinner on Saturday night but everyone is welcome to sleep out in their camp one more night. The second night is always even more free flowing than the first night as all Thrivers will have this collective experience behind them.

Sunday , August 24th 12 noon-

Folks are expected to be packed up and on their way home after ensuring that we are not leaving any sign that we were ever there. Photos are welcome for uploading to our site with the consent of the person in the photo.

Flesh was an incredible experience. Fernando set the tone of calm respect and gratitude for the rabbits on which we would feast. This was important since there were several young boys filled with the excitement of the task at hand. The group maintained the tone through the afternoon as the experts first demonstrated all steps of dressing and preparing the rabbit for dinner, and then guided us through the steps in small groups. Neither my husband nor I have hunted or had any experience with this before, but because of the calm confidence of the instructors, it was a very positive experience. There were many attendees who were knowledgeable and who have attended many Survive & Thrive Meetups – a testament to the group and it’s leader. I would highly recommend Flesh, and I will certainly attend other Meetups with this group in the future.

Peace&blessings this was a GREAT meet up. I learned a lot about ethically harvesting a rabbit and really learned to appreciate that as an omnivore I should be willing and able to slaughter and prepare my own meat. Everyone was welcoming and it was a safe environment for my five children. Thank you Fernando and team for an informative and fun event.

This was my first experience with Survive and Thrive. Fernando is a great guy, Will is amazing, the farm is a wonderful place, and you'll find many interesting and genuinely nice people there. They know their stuff and you can tell love to teach. Thanks again everyone.

This was my first meet up and it was a great experience. My family and I had a great time and learned more about harvesting small game in one day than we have 5 years watching hunting shows on tv. You can tell all of the instructors love and had a passion in their field of expertise.
Not only did the event meet my expectation but I met a lot of new folks that I am looking forward seeing again.

Our first event with the Survive and Thrive meetup and it was something special. Fernando, Gavin and Will were welcoming, thoughtful, generous teachers, and Trebs a wonderful host. A great diverse group with kids and people of all ages and backgrounds, learning and sharing together. And fun! So much fun. I wouldn't have wanted to spend my Saturday any other way.

Each time I butcher, I learn something. My boys 9 and 10 are leaning a lot for their life skills and becoming self reliant. Fernando and Will bring a lot of experience to each and every meet up. Thank you!

Hey Fernando! This lists Saturday and then also dates in March in the description. Will this event be for the whole weekend in August starting Friday or is it just for that Saturday?

Sorry for the off topic. But note that this week the DJA has dropped by 400 points. Despite positive 4%GDP for second Q 2014. Please take a moment to review World wide financial collapse. I present a strong evidence what could (or possibility) will come next.

Hi Renee - I can go on and on regarding Gross domestic Product (GDP). But to make long story short. In 2008 crash. We had a negative growth on the 1st Q (Jan - March) and positive growth on the 2nd Q (April - June) what follows after that is a crash in the 2008 stock market and the great recession. Historical GDP always had this pattern. So this will effect all the Americans in lost of their jobs. Again, I am not saying that this will happen. But a possibility. But if you are a prepper then you should be better off then average people. But one thing I must emphasize is pay off your debt and have a financial buffer for six months. (example. in an event of another recession or depression, you have enough cash to pay rent!) I hope I have answered your question. Best

I'm so glad that I randomly checked in on this page today. I've butchered my own hen before, but only with Google to help. I'm playing a show in Philly on Friday night, but I'll be there first thing Saturday morning & spend the night on Saturday with y'all. Looking forward to plugging in & gaining some new skills!

Hi, Fernando, I'm really excited! can't wait! Regarding the monetary donation to cover cost of materials is it up to $200 per family, or for the whole "Survive and Thrive" Group.

    1 · July 13

    • FERNANDO ANTONIO S.

Oh my heavens ! We only need enough to cover the rabbits that are being raised and the food basics. It may be less than that for the whole group.

      2 · July 13

alright…wimpy here. Would it be OK to participate in the trapping/catching but just observe in the everything else??? (without making any noises, I promise)

Glad to see this is being offered again. It was a great experience, and we are glad that we went last time. We won't be able to come this time, but heartily recommend it for anyone who has never done anything like this before.

I'm assuming that the days are correct, but the dates say March 14, 15 and 16. Am I correct in thinking that the correct dates are Aug. 22, 23 and 24? Thanks.
