Okay so with all due respect, vegetarians and vegans please avert your eyes now.
For the carnivorously inclined omnivores among us:
Some people become squeamish at the thought of ever having to catch, kill and butcher their own meat but will happily eat it up as long as someone else does the dirty work. That said, for those of us that take personal responsibility and self reliance seriously it is not as easily dismissed.
Your ancient relatives have eaten meat for as long as people have walked on this Earth. Meat for your DNA's brain and body function is crucial. It is in our genetic history. Our ancestors have passed along a deep rich history and we organizers of Survive and Thrive Philadelphia are intent upon keeping that ancient knowledge alive and well in our collective hearts and minds.
This is a very special outdoor weekend event that is worthy of schedule clearing and family participation. You may participate either as a weekend camper or just come out for a long one day experience. It is a FREE EVENT but the organizers will accept donations to cover the material costs up to $200.00 total.
Here is the framework:
Friday, August 22nd-
Thrivers may arrive onsite as early as 3 pm
This is going to take place on a working farm and surrounding woods. Chickens, pigs, sheep and many other animals will be a part of your experience.
Bring your own food and drink. Bring your outdoor camping gear. Prepare to meet all of your own needs. There will be running water, an indoor bathroom and kitchen sink available to us in the old farmhouse on site. Everything that you bring with you YOU are expected to bring out with you ( pack it in , pack it out ). Plan to respectfully leave no trace of yourself.
Friday evening we will have a bonfire and collective hangout. This has proven to be rewarding for so many of our members over the years. The social value within Survive and Thrive Philadelphia meetups involves sharing of lots info as well as networking. Your need to not feel so isolated for wanting to be self sufficient in such a dependent culture has merit worth your attention.
Saturday, August 23rd at 9 am sharp
We will begin instruction on the simple old ways of trapping and snaring. We will demonstrate and give hands on experience as we set working traps for beaver. Other common small game mammals in the form of squirrels, coons, possum , rabbits, groundhogs will be fleshed out too. This will be geared for beginners but if you already have some level of skill come get your hands in it to refresh your muscle memory. Stay sharp.
After a lunch break we will break off into teams of 2 or 3 people. There will be a live group tutorial on how to respectfully harvest , skin, dress ( remove guts & organs) and butcher a small animal for human consumption.
After the the first whole group tutorial then each small group will break off with their own LIVE RABBIT that has been humanely farm raised locally. With careful oversight and available assistance, you will participate in the respectful killing of a meat animal. Your team will work together to remove the skin with fur intact, remove the body parts undesired and to butcher the rabbit.
But wait !! There's more !! Late on Saturday afternoon:
We will then clean up and begin to prepare a feast of fresh tender rabbit !! A few different recipes and cooking methods will be used for different tastes . Potatoes, onions and a variety of greens will be served for a group buffet dinner. Bringing potluck desserts is certainly welcome. Plates and cutlery and paper towels will be provided. You are on your own for drinks.
Some folks may wish to part after we clean up from dinner on Saturday night but everyone is welcome to sleep out in their camp one more night. The second night is always even more free flowing than the first night as all Thrivers will have this collective experience behind them.
Sunday , August 24th 12 noon-
Folks are expected to be packed up and on their way home after ensuring that we are not leaving any sign that we were ever there. Photos are welcome for uploading to our site with the consent of the person in the photo.
