Family Friendly Firearms Training

This is a series of small scale and personable firearms classes that is geared toward families, couples and singles that have little or no experience with gun culture. Unlike most of our other meetups we will be limiting the group size to 12 people total for each session. Each session will be made up of the same basic information. In a quiet classroom setting we will teach basics for about and hour and then for the following two hours we will go into the range and shoot each of the weapons that have been presented to the class.

This is a basic summary of what each class will consist of :

* The Power of " No. " - Survival Psychology in relation to the use of firearms

* Gun safety practices - what to do and what not to do when handling firearms to prevent unintended injury and death.

* Gun law in  Pa, NJ,and De - sorting facts from rumors, looking at federal laws now and later

* Exploring different weapon platforms - Pistols (revolvers/semiautos) , Rifles ( bolt action/semiauto), Shotguns ( long & short )

* Understanding ammunition - strengths and weaknesses of various calibers and powder packs, the amazing selection of shotgun ammo to be found

* Proper footing, posture, hand and eye placement for good shooting results

* How to acquire proper sight alignment and hit what you aim for

* Dealing with weapon jambs on semi autos for rifles and pistols

* How to clear and sweep rooms of predators and the best ways to employ a flashlight with a gun

Then we will go into the range and get in a good couple hours of practice with the weapons demonstrated. Eye and ear protection will be provided, ammunition and targets as well. Hands on instruction will be ever present.

We will provide a variety of firearms that are suited for every age, body type and capability.

The weapons and instructors are donated to you for free out of a simple love and respect for humanity. The range, ammo, targets and eye/ear protection will cost each participant $40.00 in Federal Reserve Notes which is due at the beginning of each class offered.

Children of and age and ability to PAY ATTENTION AND TAKE THE SUBJECT SERIOUSLY are welcome and in fact are at the core of our planning efforts. Ages 8 and up are our preferred student ages. All of our instructors are seasoned parents and/or well suited to deal patiently with beginners.

The RSVP list will be taken very seriously here. If you are on the primary list but find that you cannot attend then PLEASE CHANGE YOUR STATUS IMMEDIATELY SO THAT THOSE ON THE WAITING LIST MAY ATTEND. Those in the front waiting list should take the personal responsibility of checking the list in the days and hours prior to the event so that we may all use the donated time and effort efficiently. Also to that end - please arrive on time.

This will be a fun and friendly event that will soberly deal with deadly serious subject matter.

I don't know why all who rsvp'd did not show, but I did notice that several people changed their rsvp's to "Not Attending" on Sat. Since there were people on the wait list, it should not have been a problem. However, my guess is that those on the Wait List figured they would not get into the Meetup and did not bother to re-check the wait list on Sat. Once the others cancelled, the ststus of the Wait List people was automaticaliy changed to Attending. Had they checked at the last minute, they would have known. The lesson to be learned: If you are Wait Listed for an event with a limited number of attendees, you MUST continue to check the list right up to the last minute OR change your rsvp to Not Attending.

I suspect that it was this oversight was the sourse of the problem, rather that blatant disregard for Fernando or S&T.

Those that came learned exactly what they came for and had a good time doing it. Great!! On the other hand - 7 of the 12 people that RSVP'd ( thus BLOCKING SEVERAL OTHERS FROM PARTICIPATING ) were no call/ no shows. Despite my best efforts to prevent such extremely rude and selfish behavior, it happened anyway. I am torn here. I want to keep this group as open and accessible to the least among us as possible and so the meetups are always free (unless there are costs like range fees). However when people are offered other people's time and effort for free and without any expectation of return, then the "free buffet" of information is taken for granted and often gets wasted like a plate full of food in the trashcan. That superficial bit of human nature has always rubbed me the wrong way. I generally keep my expectations of other people very low so they don't have far to fall in my mind but I must admit that this dynamic today has hurt my feelings and angered me for those that lost out.

Excellent meetup! Fernando is clearly very knowledgeable, passionate, and gears his assistance to the needs of the participants. I brought my 12 year old son for his first experience with firearms and wanted to be certain that the importance and practices of safety were were demonstrated with great care and drilled into him. I was not disappointed. If you're wondering if you will fit in or feel comfortable in the meetup group, rest assured Fernando makes sure of both.

As usual, this meetup exceeded expectations. Fernando put extrordinary effort into providing detailed safety and use instructions and answering any and all questions. He also gave one-on-one training for each person for each firearm. Fernando hauled a selection of his own firearms down there and each person had the opportunity try them, including pistols, rifles and shotguns.
