Cloud SIG - Google Compute Engine

Google announced its long awaited IaaS offering at Google I/O last month. They demonstrated an app ported for Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) running on 10,000 cores. Pretty impressive and worth a look. Please join us for an evening with Marc Cohen and Kathryn Hurley of Google. They will give us an overview of Google Compute Engine with demos followed by Q&A.

Presentation Summary:

Computing resources are faster, cheaper and smaller than ever, however, owning and maintaining those resources continues to be an expensive proposition. This talk will describe how you can leverage Google’s computing infrastructure, which routinely manages vast quantities of distributed data, at global scale, with sub-second response time, under extremely heavy load. Google Compute Engine makes that infrastructure available to everyone. Learn how to harness this technology to tackle your most challenging problems through live demonstrations and code examples.

Presenters:

Kathryn Hurley Kathryn Hurley - Kathryn Hurley is a Developer Programs Engineer at Google. She is a Fusion Tables guru and has developed numerous applications using the Fusion Tables API. She has also presented at several conferences, including Where, Google I/O, and ONA. Website: http://www.kathrynbrisbin.com

Marc Cohen Marc Cohen - Marc is a Developer Relations Engineer focusing on helping developers get the most out of Google's advanced cloud computing technologies. He has over 25 years of experience designing and building reliable, distributed systems in the telecommunications industry. A Seattle native, Marc enjoys basketball, indie pop/rock music, and teaching Python Programming at the University of Washington. Blog: http://mkcohen.com

MC Srivas M.C. Srivas - CTO and Co-Founder of MapR - Srivas ran one of the major search infrastructure teams at Google where GFS, BigTable and MapReduce were used extensively. He wanted to provide that powerful capability to everyone, and started MapR on his vision to build the next-generation platform for semi-structured big data. His strategy was to evolve Hadoop and bring simplicity of use, extreme speed and complete reliability to Hadoop users everywhere, and make it seamlessly easy for enterprises to use this powerful new way to get deep insights. That vision is shared by all at MapR. Srivas brings to MapR his experiences at Google, Spinnaker Networks, Transarc in building game-changing products that advance the state of the art.

Good demo of GCE, particularly through the use of MapR's demos.

Very interesting, for instance it turns out that GCE uses KVM for their virtualization technology. Can't wait to hear about their pricing details soon.
