Its amazing & astounding that a Healthcare meetup provides ungodly pizza , so we can meetup with ungod sooner rather than later, keeping Physicians employed in the meantime with making money off avoidable ailments

    July 12, 2014

    • Mallory E. M.

I agree KB -- and this is why I tried to take a moderate position when I commented. But I am wondering if maybe this is a barrier in cultural communication. It's a long stretch to justify, but I am trying.

What a lively debate on the ungodliness of pizza! Let's form a healthy meal sub-group. This will enable us to offer healthy meal options without putting excess burden on our amazing organizers. The options will vary from no food to salad+sandwich to more elaborate. It all depends on you. Connect with me and let's find ways to bring healthy options to group events. My email is [masked].

I made a serious technical comment (very relevant!) : If one wants to be "credible" in healthcare /quantified -self, then one must practice what one preaches. Otherwise its hypocrisy. Pizza, free or otherwise, might also violate the Hippocratic oath, "Do no Harm." Moreover, to grow an organization (Mission statement?), public relations rule #1: Be credible. Perhaps, Ms Taylor & Ms McLaren can help us get to the right solution.

Check out law of attraction and see if that is helpful ... Hint....You are giving a negative vibe...perhaps you want to correct that, but then again maybe you don't... It's not about credibility how many nurses and physicians are overweight mostly nurses?

      July 14, 2014

    • Jeff B.

The take away here is that we do not practice what we preach and consumer do not care about their health until they are forced to. Apps are not going to change this. At OHSU Medical School Informatics meeting we always had pizza.

      July 15, 2014

  • Jeanne H.

If you are not going, please update your RSVP now. There are people on the waiting list and we need to plan accordingly. Also, if you want to bring other food to share, that's fine too. Thanks. See you there!

Good point, I am wondering how this is going to work with so many signed up. even if only 1/2 show that is still 250. *****Need to car pool, because of parking*******

Whether this is your first time or not, please bring business cards. This is a networking event and it's professional to have plenty of cards to handout. If you don't have cards, please consider going to Vistaprint and getting some made. It's very inexpensive. They do have a sale now. http://tinyurl.com/oct9shj Thanks.

    July 15, 2014

  • Mahmood A.

It is not pleasant to see such a disruptive and irrelevant discussion. This is a technical forum. The sponsors have been gracious to provide food (as they see fit and can afford) for the benefit of those who come to the meeting following their long work day. I don't find it proper to expect a particular menu. If someone does not like the food, they can eat before or after they go to the meeting. Alternatively, they can bring their own food or bring more to share. Or better yet, sponsor to bring food for the event. We can stive to be perfect but not at the cost of making it worse.

Both my wife & daughter are MDs. They assure me that eating pizza over a decade+ will result in medical problems. Therefore, its a violation of the Hippocratic oath from a legal perspective. Eating pizza frequently is somewhat akin to smoking cigarettes in the 1950s, except that the ailments take longer to develop in other organs, not lungs. but Hey, its a free country. Eat all the pizza you want. Have whatever belief you have. Ignore data science. BTW, I'm only exercising my 1st amendment "free speech" rights. Y'all can do so too ! Another case in point, Nor. Ca. Psych Assoc. states that hash is a nono, particularly for those under 30. But, Washington & Colorado have legalized recreational use. There is going to be a flood of psychiatric breakdown cases a decade from now. Many legal items are also lethal. And, its ALL healthcare related.

Hi Jay I like the way you put your arguments or statements :) BTW what does it mean hash here? Hash brown or something? Sorry for my ignorance.

Hi. I'm Daricus, 26 and founder of tberries. I'm looking for a developer/cofounder for a video sharing social networking app. I've ran businesses for 14 years and was recently featured in Kiplinger magazine, the Steve Harvey talk show, etc. I have a group of friends with over 33+ million followers. I'm helping them and in return they'll transfer 10 million users within the first year. I'd love to sit with a developer, explain my plan and hopefully find my cofounder. Not looking to hire a developer just a co-founder. [masked]

Eating pizzas is not mandatory for participation, and I am sure most of us can survive this two hour period without any food. In fact, I'd much rather listen to the discussion without the distraction of someone chewing in seat next to me.

I personally am quite strict with my diet and I do it in part for health reasons. I do not do it for religious convictions -- maybe cultural, though, as I think not eating meat as kind of a culture. Speaking for myself, I know I would contribute a little money for a catered event. You know, like part of a ticket charge? There are lots of catering outfits in the area I am sure who could do vegetarian/vegan options...

Jayant: I remember when I was in law school and at the student-run events they would always have pizza on the menu for student org leaders to select from. And like you, I had a similar reaction. I look forward to maybe helping SVHealth putting something together if I am asked to, moving forward!

    July 13, 2014

  • Lissanthea T.

I ran a Health Tech meetup in Sydney - we helped test and provide feedback for various healthy catering startups - they got user insight, and we got good food!

    4 · July 13, 2014

Why not ask interested attendees to contribute "pot luck" Store purchased healthy food as a contribution ? A few will & many won't. However, many cultures/ religions have fasting days with attendant health benefits. So, starvation for an evening may be preferable to being "tempted" by unhealthy pizza. Moreover, "quantified self" instruments will measure a calorie intake reduction too ?! "Practice what you preach!" No ?
