About MHMN:

Mobile Health Market News is an online channel that monitors information on the rapidly evolving mHealth market and presents it in a well-organized easy to read format. The site’s goal is to help bridge the knowledge gap between the technology entrepreneurs who are bringing new technologies to the health care space and the established health care players who are looking technology solutions to health care problems.

Our mission is to foster a forum for networking, mentoring and entrepreneurship among professionals in life sciences - Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medtech, R&D services and other related sectors.  We also provide an essential resource for industry, investors, educational institutions and students wishing to build working relationships between the life science industries in the US and globally.

One of the major events we organize every year is the annual one-day conference (please see http://www.eppicglobal.org/AnnualConference2012.asp, for Jan 2012 conference details)

Next year’s annual conference will be held on January 6, 2013 at the Westin SFO Airport Hotel, Millbrae, CA. The theme is, “
New Frontiers in Health Care Sciences,” which is very relevant to Health 2.0. Our goal is to showcase the multiple dimensions of scientific progress and partnering opportunities in four areas: Synthetic Biology, Personalized Medicine, Repurposing of Drugs and Emerging Tools from Discovery to Delivery (or Informatics & Health-IT). We are still in the process of finalizing the program.

It was great meeting many of you tonight. If you want assistance implementing HIPAA privacy protections, documented policies, training, and risk-based controls and not lie to your customers to make a sale and violate the law, then feel free to contact me. I'd love to help!

John, I did not mean to suggest that your company breaks the law. However, you urged a room full of health entrepreneurs on how to avoid the tough issue by just saying that their solution is HIPAA compliant. I took issue with that. Instead, you all have a huge opportunity to make that sale by educating your prospective customers on how your solution is secure and privacy protective. For instance, one can start by telling said office manager that there is no such thing as a "HIPAA compliant" solution. HIPAA compliance refers to a company's practices and controls and not to a specific product.

That said, I found your presentation very creative and humorous.

I work with several health startups on their privacy and security issues such as HIPAA, on a variety of items including risk-based policies and procedures, risk assessments, training, application security architecture, etc. I am seeing an increase in covered entities doing their due diligence on their potential business associates prior to signing contracts. This includes audits against the startup company's policies, procedures and internal controls.

I have also worked with covered entities in the medical center and payer space following their ONC audits. There is no question that one area most covered entities have not focused on is ensuring that their business associates are complying with the Rule. We can expect to see an increased focus on this over the next few years. If you're interested in learning more, I teach a course at the UC Santa Cruz extension program on Privacy& Security for Healthcare and Biosciences. Feel free to contact me if I can be of help to your company.

Hey everyone -- I wasn't able to make it last night unfortunately and it sounds like I missed out on a great event.

I am a 2nd time entrepreneur..sold the assets of my first company in February of 2012. Its my belief that some massively meaningful businesses will be built as Obamacare takes form and affordable healthcare spreads across the country. I'm specifically interested in biometric testing and using advances in mobile form factors to make regular biometric testing (weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol) the cornerstone of a comprehensive wellness program. There is no reason someone should have to schedule an appointment to get a sense of how their BMI or blood pressure is tracking.

I love talking with other entrepreneurs especially in the healthcare space. If anyone is on the Peninsula regularly please drop me a line at [masked].

Following my presentation on HIPAA & Mobile Start-Ups, I'd like to offer this to the community: One of my team-mates was a lead app developer at eBay, the other ran a network security company at a Y-Combinator start-up, and the other hacks energy companies and hospitals for a living (paid by the companies as a net-sec expert). As well, my General Counsel is an expert on HIPAA and IP, so if anyone has questions or concerns about HIPAA or wants to talk to my colleagues over a beer, you're more than welcome to come visit us in downtown San Francisco and meet with us. It's free, but it may cost you a round of Guinness. Cheers!

Beyond Lucid's Mediview solution for EMT's was well done, showing the business need from Chris' personal experience and an easy to use interface to record salient patient information quickly and easily. When time is critical, communication between the EMTs and the hospital can mean life or death for the patient. The HIPAA compliance talk by John Kim was a light hearted way to show that you can overcome potential HIPAA objections about your product/svc. Loved the illustrations John! Bill Reichert gave a compelling presentation for the "Wow" factor which was spot on for this audience. Be clear, be compelling, and be credible was his mantra. The 10 biggest lies from entrepreneurs was helpful advice on what to avoid when pitching to VC's. I hope the entrepreneurs in the audience take note! Great evening overall. Networking was easy to do with this open group!

Why choose a VC speaker who is not interested in investing in healthcare startups? It was quite a disappointment.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
