After thinking about Ed's comment, I want to take back my earlier one. Although IDEO's design practices have been covered in books and articles, a quick look at most SW products on the market show that true User-responsive design is rare. Given the number of start-ups in the audience, this was actually a very relevant topic. I apologize to Dennis.

Yikes, what is going on with these posts. I normally bypass, but this was a reasonably well run meeting and a good presentation by IDEO. I have been attending various start-up meetings for 15 years and have suffered through more than a few snoozefests. This was not one. IDEO is a wake-up call about design methodology which is finally getting some respect with the spreading D-school concept. The failure of recognizing good design methodology has been a curse on our industrial system. It is great to see it entering the start-up environment.

Thanks for a great event. I mentioned to a few folks that I am an indie film producer and am running a Micro Film Festival today in SF. Some films deal with mental health and mental illnesses like psychosis, depression and dementia. Please come to see how films can help with wellness. microfilmfest.eventbrite.com Online and in-person.

Hi all, thanks to Akhsar, David and other organizers for the great event. I gave out many biz cards right after my demo/talk. However, the company mail server acted up earlier today and some of you got bounced emails. Now it's all fixed.
As mentioned, I'd like to collaborate with expert in healthcare domain using my motion gaming tools and we can start by bouncing some ideas. You may also try out the technology yourself. Please contact me at [masked] if interested.

This was my first meeting. Loved the energy all around and energy of organizers david, nidhi and akhsar. Would have loved to hear Dennis talk more from design challenges with respect to health and wellness versus design in broader scope. Also would love to explore unconference approach to facilitate more conversations among attendees on topic they want to talk or learn about. Had tried this in another conference and found it very highly effective.

    • Hitesh R.

for further on unconferencing.. here is wiki http://en.wikipedia.o... ; if enough takers, would love to volunteer and try out in next month's session.. we can try a 30 min session covering about 10-12 topics of interest.. to see how members like it...

the 4 presentations were relatively short and sweet. But the last pitch unfortunately went on forever. Please leave at least 1 hour before the event to network, keep the pitches to 3 no more then 4 companies with 3 to 5 minutes each, and the last presenter only having a max of 10 to 15 min. Not an hour to 2 hours. And at least 1 hour after to network again.

I have personally used this format when hosting events for well over 8 years and it works perfectly. People leave with good contacts, and are happy, not tired.

    Feedback for Dennis,
Sorry your presentation was not informative, felt like a long pitch about his company and left no real understanding how his company could actually help anyone. Keep it short and sweet, less examples. (choose 3 to 4) not 15. And provide specific examples of what you actually do for each client, not broad items.

Adding to Jonathan's point above, given the focus on startups, I would have liked Dennis to share how he or Ideo could engage and help new ventures in health and wellness.

Thanks David & Akhsar for giving me 2 min. For anyone interested: http://www.prebacked.com.

Wish I could have stayed around longer - if I wasn't building a startup, I'd be at IDEO. Be it as a product designer or janitor.

It was good to see the 4 startups present. I would recommend a timer sitting in front with timecards to keep presenters on track. Technical issues need to be addressed before the speakers get there to let them know the types of video connections for their slides. Dennis gave a nice talk about IDEO's philosophy and design thinking approach. I would like to see the program start at 7pm for networking and food, 7:30pm to 8pm for the 4 startups (5 min each + 3 q's + setup) and then have the main speaker from 8pm to 8:30pm with time for networking from 8:30pm to 9pm. If you want the speaker to have 45 min, then cut the startups to 3. I'd also coach all the speakers to point the mics directly to their mouths and within 1 inch for better reception. Hope to see a copy of Dennis' slides too.

I liked all 3 parts of the meet-up: the Networking, the start-ups, and Dennis Boyle. But I wish Boyle had talked more about Health and Wellness projects; his general comments on Design, while good, have appeared in many previous IDEO books and articles.

Good. 1) Re time management -- recommend following the Silicon Valley Leadership Group model: "We start...and end...on time". 2) IDEO stuff was very timely for our team. 3) I may have met a couple of future employees! We are rocking...and this was a useful

I agree! Great presentations, loved the slide of the healthcare API - a fax machine! I wish we did not have disrespectful attendees who insist on talking loudly when a presentation is going on or ate on the phone. We have not come to hear you blabber on - and sitting in the corner of the room does not make it soundproof!
