Perl Magic: List and Hash

  • Sep 4, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • NVidia Bldg E Conference Center

Not everyone is born a Perl expert. Perl has an ability to manipulate list and hash in a manner that shocks people coming from other languages. When Lambert presented how to sort a list of ip addresses, the audience was mesmerized by the power of Perl's list/hash transformations. When asked if they wanted more, they said yes. Thus this meeting.  Lou Erickson will be the presenter.

Lou, it's been a while, but could you please post the slides? Thanks!

I wish I had seen this thread. I went to the wrong side of San Tomas and couldn't find building E. Oh well, maybe next time.

2800 Scott is what I used last week for the meeting.

I'm sorry you had trouble finding it. We're up to twelve buildings, and the lettering can be a little confusing. (Why is Building E next to Building R?) Hopefully you will be able to find E next time!

Almost "learn Perl in an hour"! For an aspiring hacker who tends to spend time in limited corners of the language, it was great to get an overall refresher. Being reminded of map, grep, and even sort, and seeing some very clever "Schwartzian Transforms" was inspiring.

I found this presentation very interesting and as usual I learned some new things.

Hello, everyone! Just a note to remind you to RSVP if you haven't. We need a full first and last name, so if you don't use that with Meetup, shoot us a note on Facebook.

NVIDIA wants that list 48 hours in advance, so that's tomorrow! Please sign up and make things easier.

You can also wait for security to make you a badge on the spot, but that requires a full trip across campus and back. If you arrive late, you can follow the instruction on the signage. It's okay, you can knock on the glass to get our attention. We'll come fetch you.

Sorry for the lack of signage. We are still working on our hosting procedures

Will be very useful to me when I start my new job Monday. I have some Perl experience, but I'm not "fluent". A lot of the things covered have PHP equivalents, so I was able to make the connections. Thanks!

Entrance badging was smoother than last time. Still, it would help if we knew the "cut-off" day/time for getting our names included for the "pre-badging." Lou's presentation was very good and much appreciated - though I feel a need to draw a picture of the variables, references and structures to understand them.

As a note, if you come in the entrance on Scott, you'll be right at the end of Building E where you need to be. The main lobby for Building E will be closed, so come right to the entrance closest to Scott. I'll have some signs up, too.

Security tells me they can have the Lobby of Building E open tonight, so if you need a badge, come to the main entrance of E - much closer!

This will be my first time at the NVIDIA site. My badge can be either Joe Konton or Joseph Konton.

Hiya, everyone! I'll be discussing some core basics of Perl and details about how they fit together and let us do amazing things. If anyone has any questions, let me know so I can be sure to answer them. And, if anyone has any resources or suggestions to share, I'm all ears!
