SW WA/OR Write To Publish Pages

The group format is this:

All writers, in every genre, are welcome. Some material may be for mature adults. We are here to support, educate, and help each person work toward his/her publishing goals. Writers of all levels of ability participate and grow through the insight and encouragement of the group.

Meetings are held from 10 a.m. to as late as 3 p.m., though participants leave when needed. At most meetings there will be a lecture related to craft or the marketing of one's work.

Submissions for critique must arrive no later than noon on the Wednesday before the meeting. To be eligible for critique, signing in to Meetup to say you'll attend must occur that same day. This is to make sure we have a good balance among the people who will be assigned manuscripts for critique.

Meetings may include discussion around a topic such as self-publishing vs. traditional publishing, however the primary focus is to review and comment on each writer's work. Although encouraged to provide writing for review, writers do not have to submit work, nor is anyone required to participate in the critiquing until they have asked to have their own work critiqued by others--then it's expected that they do the same in return from that point forward. Please view the details listed below on how to critique.

Here are the guidelines we'll follow for sharing work:

For submission of work:

  • save your document in MS Word or Open Office (which is free); the document file should include your name and the date the work is to be critiqued, i.e.: 9-5-13 Linda
  • up to 5 pages, double-spaced (fewer pages are fine); 1" margins; 12 pt. type
  • put your name at the top of the page
  • include the genre where you believe your book will best fit (or audience)
  • you may specify what you'd like the group to do for you with this work. For example, you might want to ask if the characters seem realistic or you might want to see if the story/text has a good flow to it. Most weeks, you'll also receive a full professional editing of your work from the group moderator. You may also ask for a general review.
  • send your work to the moderator (linda@thepublishingauthority.com) and it will be emailed to each person in the group (email addresses are collected during meetings)
  • be timely (no later than Wednesday's at noon)
  • if you want the critique emailed to you AFTER it's been critiqued in the meeting, include your email address at the top of the page; the group moderator never gives out emails

For review of work:

  • make notes for use when commenting within the group, or bring your laptop (WiFi is generally available at this site)
  • Do not email the person to discuss the work before we meet
  • remember we are here to support each other in our writing, so please be prepared with constructive comments that will benefit each writer (you're only commenting on the work of two to four writers each session)
  • put as much into each work as you'd like to receive in return
  • no political or religious arguments are allowed
  • it's fine if you're not familiar with a specific genre, just contribute what you can. Take a look at the other "page" section here that outlines how to do a critique.
