Camp by Lava Beds National Monument

We’re finally going to visit the Lava Beds National Monument!

We will be camping at Eagle’s Nest RV park located 25 miles from the south entrance of the Lava Beds National Monument. The RV park has a playground, showers, flush toilets, horseshoes, wifi and programs at night.

I’ll lead a few hikes to check out the Lava Beds and Medicine Lake. There's more than 300 caves and Captain Jacks Stronghold to explore! This is a very remote area, so make sure you are willing to drive 5-6 hours before you rsvp. It’s an amazing area and your kids will have great memories. Hope you can make it!

Here’s some information from the site:

Lava Beds National Monument

There is so much to do and see at the Lava Beds! The monument's two main attractions are Modoc War historical sites and lava tube caves. For more information, see our "Things To Do" page, or select from the links below.

Throughout the summer we offer special events, including the Timeline Living History event, Astronomy Day & Night Sky event, and Jr. Ranger Day. For more information about these events please visit our special events page.

Planning on Going in a Cave?

There are over 22 developed caves and over, 700 discovered caves within Lava Beds National Monument. To learn more about these caves please visit the caving page. When caving we recommend that you wear appropriate safety gear including long sleeves, long pants, closed-toed shoes or boots, gloves, kneepads and helmets.

It is also recommended that everyone in your group has at least 1 flashlight. Flashlights can be checked out from the visitor center for free, from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Helmets, gloves, kneepads, cave maps and flashlights can be purchased at the visitor center, but you are always welcome to bring your own.

We'll have lots on fun adventures there. I hope you and your family will be part of them!

Fun trip! Nice camp hosts! Amazing views! Thanks Heidi for planning. It was nice meeting new families! We explored more caves on Sunday! Some of intermediate and advanced caves were doable with young kids. It was actually harder on adults since the low ceiling.

Want to go, but too many conflicting things have come up (such as kindergarten starts Monday), so we are having to pull out. We have paid for two spaces, so if anyone wants them, let me know. Hope you all have much fun!

Lot's of Lava Rocks so wear closed toed shoes. I plan on leaving early on Friday, so I can visit Turtle Bay in Redding. Let me know if you would like to go too.
