  • We will camp at the North end of the lake, Puta Creek camp ground. The gate keeper will show you where to go from there.
  • Napa Valley Sprint Tri Triathlon on Saturday/Sunday, May 4 & 5th is just around the corner.  We are in need of kayak support once again.  The kayakers are the first line of safety for our swims and are the most important aspect. Many of you have kayaked for our triathlons in the past or you have expressed interest in providing water safety.  We hope that you will want to join us again for this year’s  event.  Just fill out the form and click “submit”. To sign up to kayak for this event, click on this link below: http://www.envirosports.com/default.asp?PageID=21578

    Hey SacYakkers,

This event coordinator is looking for experienced kayakers to be out on the water for the swimming event of this triathlon. There will be hundreds of participants and we will be on the water for the purpose of their safety. The swim is only a half mile on Saturday and Sunday but there will be a lot of people. I did this last year and it was very safe and the swimmers really appreciate us for being there. We are not there to rescue them, only to be a safe place for them to stop and get their bearrings. There will be separate rescue teams for emergencies. We will be the eyes that watch for distressed swimmers, a bow and stern for them to hold on to if need be and encouraging words to support them.

The races are on Saturday and Sunday and overnight camping is on Friday and Saturday nights.

Just a note: During the Bicycle and Sprint races they close the roads to traffic to protect and accommodate the participants. This only lasts till about noon. Then roads promptly open up.

As some of you have met the Sac Sea Kayakers they are the nicest kids on the block and have invited us to join them. SO lets show them our support and join this fun event.

You must have your own kayak, PFD(required to wear), Paddle, any personal safety gear (bilge pump, whistle as well as water, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, proper clothing, quick snacks.),  and be able to handle your boat. For those who have a VHF or Marine radio, bring it for the event and for our Kayak excursions after the race. If you do not have a whistle, they provide you one to borrow. After the race we have the whole rest of the weekend to play on the water.

Also for those who want to camp there Friday night and Saturday night May 3 & 4 we will have a primitive group campsite that we all just pitch a tent or RV and hang out by the campfire. There will be porta potties near by. This place is right on the lake. You can tent camp or bring your RV or camper.  Camping is free for vollunteers....but you must be sure you sign up first.... in the 1,2 section below.

    Just added:

The campsite is right above the boat launch site which will makes it convenient the mornings for easy launching. We can kayak to and from camp all weekend!

We all just have a blast every year!It could not have been a more beautiful place to be!We will gather out on the Lake Saturday morning at 7:30 AM to set up and for a group meeting and the race starts at 8AM.  We are welcome to stay for the weekend to camp but Friday and Saturday nights camping is free.

If you want to volunteer but don't want to kayak, they need volunteers for other things as well. Just state what you want to do when filling out the online form.

Also Check out the calender for May 4/5 at Lake Berryessa for more information on this big event:

    http://www.envirosports.com/default.asp?PageID=20112

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE FUN OR WHAT???

If this is something you would like to join in on:

    1. RSVP yes, and mention if you are camping or not and what nights. (IF you no show we will find you and we will send you downstream without a paddle)

If you show you get a FREE tee shirt and get paid $40 per day... compelling argument hugh!

    2. Very Important.... Click on  http://www.envirosports.com/default.asp?PageID=21578  and sign up. You are not IN until this is done.... And you won't get a check! They make out the checks a week before the race so don't Lolly-gag about it!

Please complete all 2 tasks to join this fun event. Please feel free to send me an email if you have any questions. This is a twice a year event... And they love us to be there to support the swimmers. Saturday night we will have a pot luck dinner at 6 pm so bring a dish to share and meat to BBQ. Also bring Drinking water as no potable water is available.

FYI for those interested in camping, Pleasure Cove Campground is an option. Its on the southern end of the lake (near the Dam), and does not have lake front acces for kayak launching.

    February 25, 2013

  • Ron L.

Becky, you bring up a great point. Camping is not yet available but that could change May 1ST if the new consession contract is approved. If that happens I will camp and kayak, but I'm changing my RSVP based on the rejection notice from Enviro Sports.

    February 24, 2013

  • Cheryl W

Sigh...I was holding out hope that they will reorganize again and change our notices, but I too will regrettably change my RSVP. Have you heard any more info., Debbie?

    February 24, 2013

    • Debbie K (Puddle J.

I have not heard anything as I mentioned above I emailed Wendy last week but have not heard back about a list of those going.

      February 24, 2013

  • Sven L

If campsites are not available, I'd like to camp along that long channel (creek) about 10 miles out. I can't imagine campsites not available though at Berryessa. The road closures before and during event would keep us (support) out.

    February 24, 2013

    • Debbie K (Puddle J.

They certainly cannot stop you from camping at other places In the area.

      February 24, 2013

  • Sven L

Debbie, can you get a list from Envirosports of people that are confirmed, and status of campsites? Thanks

    February 24, 2013

    • Debbie K (Puddle J.

I emailed Wendy for a list last week and no reply. If I remember from last year notices go out a couple of weeks before the race to those who are attending.

      February 24, 2013

  • Sven L

My concern last year was too many kayakers. I think we were about 35 then, but see a need for maybe 15 or 20. I figured they would trim that back, so I rsvp'd last year.

    February 24, 2013

  • Becky

Are people who have been taken off the volunteer list still going up to the lake to camp somewhere else?
    If not, I guess I should un-RSVP.

    February 24, 2013

  • Ron L.

I too received the notice and will not be providing kayak support that weekend. But, I love camping and kayaking at Lake Berryessa so much that I have reserved a campsite for the weekend. I'm willing to share my site for 50% of the cost (per person rate applies). Email me if you're interested. I'd also like to suggest one or two night time excursions, so please bring lights. Those afraid of the dark should not apply:)

    1 · February 15, 2013

    • Cheryl W

Hey Ron, if it opens up and you get a site, count me in. I'm not scared of the dark. :) Thanks.

OK one more update. I talked to the rangers at Lake Berryessa and learned that the camping concession contract is currently being negotiated, but they have no idea when that may be approved. My reservations are at the Pleasure Cove Marina on the opposite side of the lake (near the dam) and not suitable for kayaking so I will cancel my reservation. I was told the concessions will most likely be open for the summer season, and to keep checking for updates. I'm keeping the May 3rd weekend on my schedule for camping and kayaking hoping Chaparral Cove campground is open by then. Happy Paddling!

Some of us have received a letter from Wendy Hunt about their inability to accommodate more kayak support as hands have changed at the campground, and have to limit their overnight campers. I have requested that she send an email to those who are still going To eliminate confusion. I will post information as I find out more.

    Hey Guys,
I received an email from Wendy Hunt Horning, ENVIRO-SPORTS Productions, Inc. stating that they have more than enough kayakers and that I'm not needed. Anyone else get this email?

    February 14, 2013

    • Becky

Yes, I got the same message.

This is just an FYI for whatever it's worth. There are two separate races with different swim distances. I signed up for both, plus camping F/S.
Saturday is the Napa Valley Vintage Triathlon, half ironman distance, 1.2 mi. swim.
Sunday is the Napa Valley Sprint Tri, .5 mile swim.

Enviro sports told me to sign up to volunteer for both race days separately, so I did.

    1 · February 5, 2013

    • Debbie K (Puddle J.

Hmm.... Thanks for checking on that Becky. They usually have one application for both days With separate dates right on the application. You are right I don't remember signing for two days on one application. The only question I remember was how many days we are camping. I will look into this and post accordingly.
