How To Discuss Atheism

Whether you plan to talk with peers, relatives, or others about atheism, or simply want to learn more about how to discuss the subject, come join us as we learn the 'talking points' of being atheist. Too often we are caught off-guard when someone brings up religion or atheism. In this supportive, friendly atmosphere of like-minded people, we will learn the tools of talking atheism. Feel free to just sit back and listen, or participate if and when you feel ready. It's all good. Every level of experience is welcome. Every nuance of freethinking welcome (humanist, agnostic, questioning).

--  Logical fallacies explained, with examples

--  Problems with the Christian bible in particular

--  Common believer comebacks

--  Role Playing discussions at every meeting

--  Why it's important to speak up when you're ready

--  How to speak up in different situations

--  Reading your listener - is each discussion worth it?

Every fourth Thursday of the month, hone your skills, share your experience, or just listen in.

The largest part of being well-spoken is being prepared. This is where you prepare.

This is a 5-Part Workshop given in April, May, June, July and August, 2013.  Attendance at all five earns you a Certificate of Completion for the 2013 Series.  Be sure to attend all 5 sessions to get your collectible Certificate for 2013.

If anybody wants to practice role playing on SKYPE face to face, contact me. I'm retired and have all the time in the world. Perhaps we should allow each other at least a day in advance to prepare before we actually go on Skype however, I think we should only have two or three people maximum per Skype session. Anyhow if interested contact me through this forum or at: [masked] or at[masked]

What a great idea, Tom! I'll also mention the concept at our next meeting. Thanks.

More information and sharing next time. Tossing the role play overboard. It's good to practice, but doesn't work here. Great people. Many have a lot of experience and were ready to share. I look forward to changing the format next time. It's great to have a place to learn these things.

Unfortunately had to miss it. Of course today my little pickup decides to give me trouble [in the behind and the wallet]. Looking forward to next month's. Where is the 3rd Tuesday of the month meeting held? Same place?

    • Bryson S.

The Freethought Roundtable meetup is the third Tuesday of each month in The Coffee Garden Gallery (ask the barista where it is if you are unsure). If you have something else in mind then disregard this message.

I watched an hour documentary about bigotry in the US, at the end of which I think it was Tom Brokaw who concluded that gays and lesbians are the last minority in America to gain their rights. Atheists aren't even on the radar, apparently.

    Sounds like fun.

I'll bring a self made binder of atheist quotes for all the view. During the meeting I will give out my E-mail address and if you want a copy sent to your e-mail I would be happy to oblige. Here is one of them:

My only wish is... to transform friends of God into friends of man, believers into thinkers, devotees of prayer into devotees of work, candidates for the hereafter into students of the world, Christians who, by their own procession and admission, are "half animal, half angel" into persons, into whole persons. -- Ludwig Feuerbach (Lectures on the Essence of Religion)

Don't worry about the size of the group. The room is large, and some practice will be in smaller groups anyway (no pressure to speak, ever, not even in a smaller group! We all understand!) Relax. Be comfortable. We're all in this together.
