How To Discuss Atheism

Whether you plan to talk with peers, relatives, or others about atheism, or simply want to learn more about how to discuss the subject, come join us as we learn the 'talking points' of being atheist. Too often we are caught off-guard when someone brings up religion or atheism. In this supportive, friendly atmosphere of like-minded people, we will learn the tools of talking atheism. Feel free to just sit back and listen, or participate if and when you feel ready. It's all good. Every level of experience is welcome.

--  Logical fallacies explained, with examples

--  Problems with the Christian bible in particular

--  Common believer questions and comebacks

--  Whole group discussion at end of every meeting

--  Why it's important to speak up when you're ready

--  How to speak up in different situations

--  Reading your listener - is each discussion worth it?

Every fourth Thursday of the month, hone your skills, share your experience, or just listen in.

The largest part of being well-spoken is being prepared. This is where you prepare.

June's workshop: David Diskin on "How To Respond To Typical Reasons Why Believers Say They Believe", followed by live role playing presented by Walt.  Only two presenters plus Toolbox Tips so we have more time for large group discussion.

Homework: 5 min. video called "Nothing More To Say" at http://youtu.be/_J4ZuHEYXkk.  (optional)

This is a 5-part series. We only have June, July and August remaining. See you there!

Some people are talking about a different project for those who seek deconversion-oriented combat training, more scholastic skill in high level debate, for example. I'd support a new project for those folks, yet consider it quite separate from the purpose of either "Ask an Atheist" events or these "How To Discuss Atheism" workshops. I'm very pleased to see many people attending these workshops who could use more confidence, basic information, and ways to answer the difficult questions we hear as we start to come out of the closet. My passionate mission right now is helping people come out as atheists who are atheist secretly, or are questioning, let them know they're supported, and help them feel and show confidence, whether they talk about atheism with believers or not. I think that's where most attendees of this workshop are right now. So, as always, find the groups that are right for you, and Carry On!

I both need the support and want to give it, as well. I thought the meeting was great and unique to others I've been to. It's maybe a fine line on the de-conversion thing, but I think I understand what you want to focus on. Look forward to next time.

Hmm, there are a few things I think need to be modified regarding the first three points on science. I'll talk to you about it at the next meetup if we have a chance.

David's arguments were helpful, others could have been a little more succinct.

I gave some thought to a question posed last night- are we here to learn to convert (deconvert) people? Personally, I wasn't. I figure if someone becomes atheist because of discussions I've had with them- icing on the cake! What I wanted, and got, from the meeting last night were ways to either deflect questions, or to turn it back onto them. Many believers feel they are entitled to share their beliefs, why they hold those beliefs, and sometimes why we should have those beliefs too. I've felt like I couldn't rebut them because it would be a personal attack on them. But if they feel perfectly entitled to "witness" to me, why shouldn't I have that same entitlement and tell them why I do NOT hold their beliefs, and depending on how rude they are, why *they* should not hold their beliefs either. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess what I took away from last night is feeling confident that I have just as much right to share my non-beliefs as they do to share their beliefs. :)

I wasn't there last night due to work, but that seems about right. The best way to know how to provide counter-perspectives is to just be competent, even outside of your field of study.

It was great seeing everyone and felt very liberating to have spoken to the group! Really cool! I hope we can develop our Ask an Atheist/Klingon Jiu-Jitsu team by recruiting a few new participants for the fun times we have out and about in our Blue shirts! Thanks again for the opportunity Judy and everyone who took the time out of their busy schedules to participate! It was appreciated on my part BIG TIME! Awesome crowd and the feedback was helpful to say a little about that.

I enjoyed it so much! I wanted to hear other people's similar experiences of breaking the ice to family and friends about Atheism. I learned what works and what will not work. To me that was important as well as other tools.

Great presentations. Humor, insights, sense of pride and community, and wonderful sharing. We heard and learned a lot. I think we all came away with a bit more confidence in ourselves as atheists, and that's what it's about. Thanks, everyone!

Cartoon version of how the bible originated. http://www.atheistmemebase.com/2013/06/20/how-the-bible-came-to-be/

Explains why it resembles the old pagan fables and has so many alterations, versions and interpretations. Pretty much debunks it as anything authoritative.

Thanks to Jeff Ford for the link.
